I am getting a solid 10-11 meg on DSL. I could get Comcast cable and
10x that speed but it would be down once or twice a day, sometimes all
day. I saw them running a new "hardline" down my street, replacing
that 35 year old cable that was up there on the pole so if I hear
their reliability improved, I might give them another chance.

I tried an LTE (cell) connection and it sucked balls. I could get
anywhere from 25+m to zero, (totally down). I think they just sent be
a bad box but support from Verison was non-existent. Nobody seemed to
know squat about this new product. I sent it back during the free
trial period.

You need to change the channel used and that

Channels 1-11 are on the 2.4GHz band. As a general rule, 2.4GHz gives you
better coverage and lower speed, compared to 5GHz.

The laptop Wifi has 802.11n channel width selections
for band 2.4 and band 5.2

Based on what you're saying, your laptop is dual band but your router only
does 2.4GHz. If you needed extra speed, you could either upgrade your
router or simply add a new router that you've configured to act as an
access point. Don't buy an actual access point since they cost more and do
much less than a wireless router.

The price difference does not usually justify the speed once you pass
a certain point.* Sending an email will take .01 seconds instead of
.001. For most of us the difference is negligible for everyday use.

It isnt the speed of sending email that matters, its uploading
videos, backups to the cloud etc that matters speed wise.

Upload speeds are always slower.

Upload speeds tend to be slower than download on cable systems, DSL, and
dial-up. Fiber systems tend to be symmetrical - same speed in both
directions.

Just click "send" and go to bed. We
did that in the old days downloading a file with a 1200 baud modem. For
most of us, that is done once a week or so, not five times a day. Is it
worth an extra $25 to $75 a month for it?

Virtually all relaively current routers can handle 5ghz. (less than 8
years old?) - actually 802.11n became standard in 2009 - so over 10
years -- and pre-standard 5Ghz was available back as far as 1999

Right. There isn't going to be a speed setting, per se. You just have to
know that the 5GHz band usually gets you better speed, at the cost of
poorer coverage, compared to the more congested 2.4GHz band. The higher
frequencies have a harder time penetrating walls, for example. The other
benefits of the 5GH band are wider channel bandwidth and much less
congestion, partly because the 5GHz channels don't overlap each other,
which is another way of saying they don't interfere with each other. On the
2.4GHz band, the only clear channels are 1, 6, and 11, but only if everyone
plays by those rules. You can do the right thing and stick to one of those
3 channels, but if your neighbor is using a channel in between, you'll see
it as interference.

How old is your laptop, John? and what router are you using? If both
router and laptop support both speeds you will have the option to
connect to 2 different connections on the router when you connect.
With mynewer laptop I can connect to my main router as either 2.4 or 5
Ghz - my i-phone automatically sellects the highest speed available
and supports g, n, and ac

And that's what you should be changing to see if
you can get a better thruput with a less busy channel.

No mention of ghz ..

You only get that when the router can do more than one band.

The laptop Wifi has 802.11n channel width
selections for band 2.4 and band 5.2

Those are the ghz. That's the band frequency, not the thruput speed.

But the band frequency pretty much dictates the maximum throughput.
2.4 tops out at 450 or 600 - 5.2 can support up to 1300 Mbps

The channel only makes a difference if you have interference (from
another modem or sometimes (particularly on 2.4ghz) a cordless phone.
The 5.2 band is your high speed - possibly your riuter does not
support it?? What make/model?

I'm in an AT$T Slow-verse neighborhood so fastest speed they offer here is 6 Mbps download and less than 1 Mbps up.

That router looks about 10 years old or so. I know people hate to upgrade
things that still work, but I agree that it seems to be 2.4GHz only.

I upgraded my router about 5 years ago when my internet speed went from
15Mbps to 50Mbps. The old router (Linksys WRT54G) could not handle the

It would be nice to borrow a newer router and test it in my home -
my wife's covid home office is second floor bedroom - router is on
the main floor - the existing setup works - I wouldn't want to
compromise her work usage.

OK .. I found an old D-Link DIR-815 in my box of goodies -
... on the 5 ghz band it was slightly faster within ~ 20 feet ;
- but almost zero signal in the basement
where the NetGear MBR1210 has good performance ;
it was about equal to the NetGear in the upstairs office.
It's possible that a newer & better 5 ghz router would
improve performance but I'm not suffering with what I have now.
Thanks all for the comments.

I used to be a big fan of the Linux version of those things, the WRT54GL,
which I loaded with dd-wrt firmware. I used one as my main router, 3 more
were scattered around the house and configured as access points, with
another 3 configured as clients. I also installed them for other people as
a side hustle and remember placing 3 orders from Newegg for a dozen each
time, plus quite a few smaller orders. When the bottom fell out and they
couldn't keep up with newer faster Internet speeds, I donated 10 to
Goodwill, some still new in the box. Great little units.
