Default The Americans who can't read

How come a great country like America has so many in this day and age!?

The US has more citizens who are illiterate - some 16 million people -
than many of its developed counterparts. Why is that?
Many complain that the system fails those who need extra help and there
is a big disparity between rich and poor areas.

Part of it is because the Federal government has taken a lot of control
away from local school systems. The department of education
is a simple political pay off to the unions. It serves no
practical purpose. It is political corruption.

And the Democratic part and the teachers unions are in bed with each
other. You can't fire a bad teacher. There is no consequence for
doing poorly. This corruption is so bad that in my state alone,
teachers make double what the private sector makes for the same
education and their retirement is off the chart.

The corruption is so bad that our Democratic party controlled
state supreme court years ago pulled s*** out of their ass and
forced through a tax increase for "education" which WAS NOT IN
OUR STATE CONSTITUTION, over riding A VOTE OF THE PEOPLE that
put the tax law there to start with.

And the same bunch of totalitarianists disallowed a ballot initiative
that would have removed another tax increase that our liar
of a governer jammed through for (ha ha) "education".

If you look at the USA's money spend for child you will find
an inverse curve. The more you spend, THE WORSE the outcome.

We have something like two teachers for every administrator.
It is corruption on a grand scale.

So the answer your question, it is POLITICAL CORRUPTION. Follow
the money.

The solution is to privatize the school system. Disallow public
employees. Contract out to private companies.

Good job at venting. I was planning to reply with the simply answer of
government corruption who prefer to keep our money in their pockets. You
summed it up much better.

I agree with the argument that most educational money in the US is
wasted but doubt if illiteracy is much worse than rest of the developed
world.

I have always argued that technical illiteracy is worse than reading
illiteracy. Some that are highly literate as most are in government
have a poor understanding of technology and mandate a lot of stupid
technical things like ethanol must be used in gasoline.

As long as we have a culture that believes you make better money being
a gangster drug dealer (or just sucking down welfare checks) than you
do getting a real job, education will not be important to that sector
of the population, no matter how much money we throw at it.

For me it is. They don't hand you enough free stuff to live the

But I thought the report said that without education, that they would
find it hard to get a job. Surely every kid should go to school.
Our parents get fined if their kids miss more than a few days off
without a decent excuse, like being ill etc.

So unless UK parents choose to home school them, then fines are imposed
for non attendance.
Also UK parents aren't allowed to take the kids on holiday during term
time, that would rack up another fine.

Which is insane.* The child is the parents' responsibility and not the
government's.* How well it gets educated is nothing to do with the
government, what we have in the UK is we're creating offspring which
belong to the state.* Everyone should tell them to **** off and home
school.

So unless UK parents choose to home school them, then fines are imposed
for non attendance.

I can't see that working.* Some kids truant.* They will always do so,
you can't fine the parent once they've got to the school.* You also
can't expect a family with two working parents to drive them there.* If
the child walks to school but ****s off somewhere on the way, that is
not the parents' fault.

Also UK parents aren't allowed to take the kids on holiday during term
time, that would rack up another fine.

We used to, many of my friends did so when I were a lad.* Cheaper time
of year or better weather.* What ****ing business is it of the
government when people take holidays?* My friends simply got notes form
the teachers of classes they missed and read up on them at home later.

It wasn't he law when you were a tearaway.

As long as we have a culture that believes you make better money being
a gangster drug dealer (or just sucking down welfare checks) than you
do getting a real job, education will not be important to that sector
of the population, no matter how much money we throw at it.

What do you do if one parent is in prison and the other is a crack
whore? We are dealing with families who are 3d even 4th generation
welfare recipients with many having a criminal record or presently
serving time.
They can't remember anyone in their family who really had a career,
just odd jobs that pay less than welfare. ... or they are making $500
a day slinging crack.
Neither really makes you want to learn algebra.

Part of it is because the Federal government has taken a lot of control
away from local school systems.* The department of education
is a simple political pay off to the unions.* It serves no
practical purpose.* It is political corruption.

And the Democratic part and the teachers unions are in bed with each
other.* You can't fire a bad teacher.* There is no consequence for
doing poorly.* This corruption is so bad that in my state alone,
teachers make double what the private sector makes for the same
education and their retirement is off the chart.

If you look at the USA's money spend for child you will find
an inverse curve.* The more you spend, THE WORSE the outcome.

We have something like two teachers for every administrator.
It is corruption on a grand scale.

So the answer your question, it is POLITICAL CORRUPTION.** Follow
the money.

The solution is to privatize the school system.* Disallow public
employees.* Contract out to private companies.
*
Ok, thanks for the explanation, Mr T.

No problem.* Gave me a chance to vent.

Good job at venting. I was planning to reply with the simply answer of
government corruption who prefer to keep our money in their pockets. You
summed it up much better.

Fix the problem. Become a teacher. See if you think you are overpayed
by the end of the first year - then the second - or the third.

See if you can do any better - if you can, I'll listen to your
bitching.

Clare,

My wife's side of the family is full of teachers. My
sister is a (terrible) teacher (that can't be fired). The
notion that they are starving is absolute garbage. It
is mostly union propaganda wanting even more money.

The public sector education establishment pay, beni's
and retirement are off the charts.

If you do not believe me, take a look at what private
sector teachers get paid versus public sector teachers
(and their endless line of useless administrators) get
paid.

And why is it the private schools do a better job that
public schools at 1/3 to 1/6 the money? This is corruption.

The solution is to privative our schools. Contract them
out like trash and water. Get the Fed the hell out of it too,

And, ANYONE who gets paid by THREATENING other with the
loss of the freedom and/or their property (gun in the back)
should never get paid more that the equivalent job in the
private sector. 80% would be the proper level. And never
unionize.

Please keep in mind that the delegates to the Democratic
convention are about ~45 to 55 (union) teachers depending
on the year. This incestuous corruption has to stop.

-T

My sister is an awful teacher. She passes illiterate students
through to the next teacher rather than fixing the problem.
And guess what? She can't be fired. She is a civil
service missile:

1) cost too much,
2) doesn't work, and
3) can't be fired

What does the UK do with misbehaving students? Haul their
parents to court? Maybe we can learn something from you.

Then stop trying to educ them. Educating is better :-)

The US has been trying that for over 50 years. One has to conclude the
experiment failed. The only question to be resolved is if they could
learn if they wanted to or if it was a hopeless endeavor to start with
but there is no way that conversation will ever take place.

That's no barrier to citizenship. A rudimentary grasp of English or
