As long as we have a culture that believes you make better money being
a gangster drug dealer (or just sucking down welfare checks) than you
do getting a real job, education will not be important to that sector
of the population, no matter how much money we throw at it.

But I thought the report said that without education, that they would
find it hard to get a job. Surely every kid should go to school.
Our parents get fined if their kids miss more than a few days off
without a decent excuse, like being ill etc.

So unless UK parents choose to home school them, then fines are
imposed for non attendance.
Also UK parents aren't allowed to take the kids on holiday during term
time, that would rack up another fine.

Hi Bod,

Â* What does the UK do with misbehaving students?Â* Haul their
parents to court?Â*Â*Â* Maybe we can learn something from you.

Does that mean the same as the term I'm familiar with, "Kaffir" from South Africa? "A black man acting above his status".

Not precisely. It's used by black people to mock other black people for
attempting, for example, study hard and get good grades in school.

I don't know what k-12 means.
UK parents get fined if their kids don't achieve at least (I think it's
96%) attendance each term.
Something like that.

If a kid is constantly disruptive at school, I'm not sure what happens.
I'm not sure of all the rules these days. Our kids are in their 40s.

T posted for all of us...

Clare,

My wife's side of the family is full of teachers. My
sister is a (terrible) teacher (that can't be fired). The
notion that they are starving is absolute garbage. It
is mostly union propaganda wanting even more money.

The public sector education establishment pay, beni's
and retirement are off the charts.

If you do not believe me, take a look at what private
sector teachers get paid versus public sector teachers
(and their endless line of useless administrators) get
paid.

And why is it the private schools do a better job that
public schools at 1/3 to 1/6 the money? This is corruption.

The solution is to privative our schools. Contract them
out like trash and water. Get the Fed the hell out of it too,

And, ANYONE who gets paid by THREATENING other with the
loss of the freedom and/or their property (gun in the back)
should never get paid more that the equivalent job in the
private sector. 80% would be the proper level. And never
unionize.

Please keep in mind that the delegates to the Democratic
convention are about ~45 to 55 (union) teachers depending
on the year. This incestuous corruption has to stop.

-T

My sister is an awful teacher. She passes illiterate students
through to the next teacher rather than fixing the problem.
And guess what? She can't be fired. She is a civil
service missile:

1) cost too much,
2) doesn't work, and
3) can't be fired

Tell us how you really feel.

Only our first 11 years are compulsory. They're called Primary 1 to 7,
then secondary 1 to 4. Secondary 5 and 6 are optional, but a university
requires at least the 5.

https://www.labor.ny.gov/workerprote.../schlattd.shtm

It varies by state but for NY a minor must attend school until they
reach 16. There is no requirement about the grade level they must reach.
Typically 8th grade students are 13 or 14. However when I taught 8th
grade some in the D section were just waiting for their 16th birthday.

I don't know what the current scheme is but in those days it was
homogenous grouping of students with similar abilities.

A college bound
B possibly college bound, at least to a two year college
C College doubtful, skilled trades likely
D burger flippers and border line retards

One of the saddest parent conferences I had was with a family that
realized their son was a moron. By that I mean in the sense of the
original meaning of the word, someone with an IQ of 51 to 70. He was in
a D section but the rest of the students were enough smarter to egg him
on to do stupid things for their amusement. The parents knew what was
going on but there was no other place in the system for him.

Fortunately I was large for my age and seldom had that problem. At the
time the state minimum age was 18 and most bartenders weren't too nosy
if you didn't cause problems.

The real pain in the ass was driving. I was too young to take driver ed
in high school and benefit from the insurance deduction. At 16 you
could get a junior license that came with restrictions like no night
time driving without adult supervision, and only one passenger under 21
during the day.

How come a great country like America has so many in this day and age!?

The US has more citizens who are illiterate - some 16 million people -
than many of its developed counterparts. Why is that?

Partially because we have millions of immigrants from countries where
illteracy is the norm.

That's no barrier to citizenship. A rudimentary grasp of English or
literacy in any known language apparently is optional.

So when she endangers someone's life because she can't read a sign,
that's ok?

Apparently. I once had a maintenance man working for me who couldn't
read. He was a willing worker but there were a few problems like when he
mounted an electrical panel upside down despite the 'This Side Up' sticker.

One day I sent him to a rental place to pick up a Hilti (powder actuated
fastener system). He came back without it since you had to take a
rudimentary written safety quiz.

In particular he couldn't read 'No Parking' or 'One Way' signs on a
selective basis.

I also hung around with an illiterate woman for a while. She had other
skills that did not require literacy.

So, why will nobody in real life listen to your senile stories that you keep
spouting here on Usenet day after day, lowbrowman? There MUST be a reason!

Kindergarten though 12th grade. Year 1 to Year 13 or 6th Form. It's the
basic warehouse for kids until their 18th year. I cheated, skipped
Kindergarten and went on to university at 16. The problem with that is
you're two years younger than your classmates.

We have the same stupid 16 years old rule here. A number of my friends
ended up entering "fifth year" for 3 months, and clearly not bothering
to learn anything. Most of their teachers just babysat them and didn't
bother with a course of any sort. Absolutely pointless, they may aswell
have been sat at home watching TV instead of costing the taxpayer money.

Were the parents dumb too? How else could you get dumb genes?

No, they seemed like normal working class people, not brilliant but not
noticeably messed up. They were aware of the kid's problem and at least
trying to do something about it rather than just writing him off. Not
everyone wins the genetic lottery. The kid wasn't Downs, just not too
bright. He was well behaved when the other kids weren't putting him up
to stuff.

Well, you can still correct it, Birdbrain. Do everyone in your neighbourhood

I will also admit I would never have kids as only those with
perfect genes should ever pass them on. Don't have kids just because you
feel like it, if you do, you are a selfish **** polluting the world with
more inferior people.
