Painting vinyl? ? ?
The base of the downspouts on our building are some kind of vinyl or hard
plastic -- I think it has a name of initials, like PCP or some such. They are white, and I'd like to paint them brown to match the aluminum downspouts. Does this material paint all right? Would I need to use a primer, and if so, what kind? And what kind of paint? |

The plastic pipe will be either PVC (vinyl) or ABS (styrene), white tells me it is probably PVC. Both can be painted but the paint doesn't bond very well. However, if you don't drag hoses around it or contact it much, the paint can last for years as it has on mine. Just keep the paint can around for occasional touchup as needed. |

ANY solvent based paint will stick better than latex. Clean it good first by wiping it down with brake cleaner or acetone, then spray with krylon or rustoleum rattle can. -- Steve Barker remove the "not" from my address to email |

Acetone can damage vinyl and any UV coating, even melt it. Something milder is suggested. Sudsy ammonia diluted would work. |

Scrub clean it. Give it a light sanding to abrade it. Prime & paint. Bonding primer is best. Not cheap but an excellent brand: http://www.ximbonder.com/upload/pdfs...%20%201143.pdf Sherwin Williams carried it a few years back. |

Thanks to one and all for good suggestions. I'll check out each one and
choose what seems best. -- Ray "Ray" wrote in message ... I used Krylon to paint mine, Since then I have used latex over the Krylon and it works well too. Some of the spots that was just latex directly on the PVC didnt hold up so well. but not that badly either. It didnt start peeling off until after it started to fade. I know the automotive suppliers sell primer for plastic. This would probably be good. Jimmie Jimmie |
