As I predicted, things are hotting up with regards to Venezuela,
America's biggest source of foreign oil. (As a result of various
issues they have threatened to cut off oils supplies to the US.
This is the next US foreign war. Provoked by the US ally Colombia.
Socialists, friends of Cuba, near to hand and all that oil. Perfect
range of excuses.

Venezuela is 5th. We (U.S.) get more than twice as much oil
from Canada than we do from Venezuela.

"Venezuela [is] America's biggest source of foreign oil."

Huh?

Venezuela supplies a bit less than 11% of US imports and it is the FIFTH
largest exporter of oil to the U.S.

Further, their oil is pretty crappy, suitable for making asphalt and not
much else.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/p...nt/import.html

More further: Oil is fungible. If Venezuela cuts off oil to the US, that
means they will sell it to someone else. The "someone else" will not be
buying oil from supplier #2, so we'll get that.

Venezuela is aiding and harboring terrorists that attack Columbia.
A computer captured from FARC guerillas had lots of info on it.Solid proof.
Also,Venezuela has been arming far out of proportion to their regional

Actually, Venezuela is a distant 5th in terms of their
oil exports to the US.

Canada alone sends the US more than double what Venezuela does.

Thinking back, they did depose him once, several years ago, but let
him go and he came back to power. Too bad they didn't shoot him when

And Venezula's oil is especially nasty (high sulfur if I remember)
and only about 1 or 2 refineries outside US can handle it. He doesn't
have a lot of places to go in real life.

I have visted Venezuela. There are lots of people there don't like
Chavez I can tell you.
Well, he needs to be prevented from any nuclear experiments, that's
clear.
The best way would be to close down tight the border with Colombia, If
he remains illegally president after the next election there may well
be another revoluccion.
None of his neighbours likes him, there's plenty of scope.

Yeah, in 1989, twenty-one years ago. Billions of barrels shipped since,
and not a drop spilled. Pretty good record, I'd say.

Uh oh. We have a logic failure. Does the passage of time change this truth?

"Compensation still not paid to many."

Does the passage of time change the FACT that General Electric polluted the
Hudson River, and has lined the pockets of enough politicians to assure that
they'll never have to clean up the mess?

Of course not.

At the time, what GE dumped into the river was not regarded as "pollution."
(I could be wrong, but I think I recall correctly). Now various whiny types,
including the government, wants GE to pay for something not illegal when
they did it, just like the fine WalMart is currently fighting (and the
source of an earlier extended thread).

I think so too-- Even within my memory some NY Governor volunteered to
drink a bottle of PCB's just to show how harmless they were. [I had

OK- Forgetting the fact that when they did it, few folks thought there
was anything wrong with the PCBs-- Here is GEs blurb saying they've
spent over $1billion on cleanups. [probably a few hundred million of

For some reason the USA is always the last advanced economy to

Could it be commercial reasons and the average American can go hang?

Our corporations have done a fabulous job of hiding information, and
brainwashing. My neighbor hoses her lawn down with unbelievable amounts of
chemicals. Her logic: "How could they sell it if it wasn't safe? And I'm not
allergic to it, so I don't worry."

Then she comments about pollution in Lake Ontario and blames all of it on

Perhaps, but let's face it: Garden centers still sell plenty of poison.
Based on the number of perfect lawns I see in this country, demand for
poison is higher than ever.

Look up 'deep pockets'. Entire EPA / Superfund business model is, IMHO,
prima facie unconstitutional, in as for all practical purpose, title for
anything that may someday be declared HazMat, never passes. You merely
go back along the chain of possession until you find somebody with money.

Don't get me wrong, I think the nasty stuff needs to be cleaned up, and
I don't have any good solutions for how it should be paid for. But I
always cringe to see Bad Law used, even for nominally noble ends.
Government extortion is never a good idea. The only certainty is that
the lawyers get rich, and a greater or lesser portion of the cost gets
added to the national debt. Probably cheaper to only haul the companies
to court when there is, ya know, actual evidence that they violated
actual laws in force at the time that the material was sold or disposed of.

My neighbor hoses her lawn down with unbelievable amounts of

I'm not allergic to it, so I don't worry."

Then she comments about pollution in Lake Ontario and blames all of it
on Kodak.

Clearly, education is terrible in your neighbor's case. Or she has
diminished receptivity.

Perhaps, but let's face it: Garden centers still sell plenty of poison.
Based on the number of perfect lawns I see in this country, demand for
poison is higher than ever.

Wanna join my new environ(mental) group PETI People for the Ethical
Treatment of Insects? Perhaps get some naked women to skitter around
wearing nothing but antenna and bug eye like sunglasses? A little
green and brown body paint may help?

Fun, but too much work. I'd prefer to watch my neighbors and other lawn
poison freaks ingest the stuff they think is safe. That'll clean up the
problem in the most expedient way, although it'll wreak havoc on the real
estate market.

You would be amazed at the number of handy poisons have quietly
slipped off the shelves in the UK. My theory is that the
manufacturers have found some problem and gone quiet hoping the public
will never find out.
There's quite a few listed here that have quietly gone.
