Default Teen electrocuted changing bulb at gas station

(04-19) 13:09 PDT DALY CITY -- A 19-year-old gas-station worker in
Daly City was electrocuted as he was changing a fluorescent light, an
autopsy found Monday.

Mustafa Algazawy of San Francisco was changing a 16-foot-long,
120-volt bulb at the 76 gas station on South Mayfair Avenue when he
was electrocuted about 1:20 p.m. Sunday, said San Mateo County Coroner
Robert Foucrault.

The gas station's manager suffered a heart attack when he saw Algazawy
fall to the ground, said Krisann Chasarik, spokeswoman for Cal/OSHA,
which is investigating the fatality. The manager's name and condition
were not released.

Algazawy "was a great worker, and our hearts and condolences go out to
the family," said Cina Flores, a district manager for the gas station.
She said the circumstances of Algazawy's death are under
investigation.

Yes another example of fine journalism... not. Hardly any content, and
the bulk of what is in the piece is wrong.

A sixteen-foot-long bulb?

Is there such a thing? Longest I've ever seen is 8ft.

I can't find that; not online anyway.

I /do/ find specialized ballasts that are made to accommodate total bulb
footage of up to 16ft. This means /bulb combinations/ that total 16ft, such
as two 8-footers, four 4-footers, etc.

I've handled 8-ft fluorescents, and it's not easy. I can't imagine how hard
it must be to handle one twice that length.

I don't know if there is one 16', but they do make custom sizes. I had to
get one for a sign that was either 10 or 11 feet long. It actually looked
like two bulbs welded together. These were T12 HO lamps

I wonder what voltage is needed to light a 16 footer? Then to make
things worse, if it's a solid state ballast it's at a high frequency
too. Then a fall to the ground also. Ouch. Poor kid.

Either two 8 foot lamps taped together or one of those deadly

Please define "racist", I see the word used in some of the
silliest circumstances. Most people who use the word have
no idea what it means. "Indecorous" describes the language
you took exception to much more accurately. Perhaps "insensitive"
could also describe his twisted comment.

I know they make some long ones, BAck in the 60s my dad ran a filling
station. The office ceiling was 10ft and I remember that you couldnt
stand the bulbs up inside the office.

I seem to have a problem with the pins, too. I like those single pin spring
loaded types a lot better. I'm always afraid I'm going to pop the glass,
and have it rain down on me.

I've seen some of those buggers that are weak or very cold take a very long

What happens usually happens after the zap. Many witnesses do not know CPR,
and therefore it is not administered until the heart can take over. AC
shocks interrupt the electrical rhythm of the heart, and until that gets
back into synch, the person does not get proper blood flow. There are only
a couple of minutes to initiate CPR, and brain damage begins.

The witness, in this case, also had a medical emergency, so I would assume
that he did very little to assist the victim. Also not stated was whether
there was other trauma from the fall. Whacking your head on the floor from
that height is enough to kill you, too, or in combination. Then, if there
are any other cardiac irregularities, either known or undiagnosed, the high
frequency AC shock could have triggered a cardioelectric event such as
fibrillation or arrhythmia.

He could not have been in contact with the electricity for that long, as he
would have fallen and lost contact.

Just a sad story.

And, while it's amusing to think the plonked will waste bandwidth posting
snarky responses which you will never have to see, I think if you're going

The report says he was electrocuted while changing a bulb. It does not
say that it was the actual changing of the bulb that electrocuted him.

"But something went wrong as the San Francisco resident climbed on top
of a *metal enclosure* that holds propane tanks on the outside of the 76
gas station at 101 S. Mayfair Ave., police said. Somehow, as Algazawy
changed the florescent light bulbs on the outside of the station, *he

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said".

no,you just have to touch the HOT side and be touching some other ground
point. resting one arm on an aluminum ladder sited on the ground could be

came into contact with a 120-volt power source* and was electrocuted,
San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said".
http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_14917381

Based on that description I would think that it was normal 8' flouro
lamps, the reflector / cover was missing and probably a wire nut had
fallen off exposing the twisted and still connected power lead which he
bumped while maneuvering the 8' tube. Falling from standing on the 6'
high or so LP tank cage probably sent him head first into concrete as
well.

Certainly a better report than the original one. Either way sucky for
the kid and the manager.

According to new Usenet etiquette, it is better to just plonk someone
than to announce that you are plonking them. But, like you, I still like
the sound effect.

Steve

And, while it's amusing to think the plonked will waste bandwidth posting
snarky responses which you will never have to see, I think if you're going
to ignore someone it's only polite to tell them.

Great minds think alike. I'm old school, so I tell them. It's like not
liking a restaurant and not going back. I like to tell the people that I
didn't like it and won't be back rather than just vanishing.

Some of those attendants at the convenience stores have long arms.
Wouldn't one have to touch both ends at the same time to be

Sorry, someone had to say it.

no,you just have to touch the HOT side and be touching some other ground
point. resting one arm on an aluminum ladder sited on the ground could be
enough.

Poor guy. First he gets zapped. Then he falls no one knows how far and
hits who knows what. Then his only aide and rescuer has a heart attack. I
wonder what was going through that poor guy's mind.

I would rather change an 8 ft single pin to those 4 ft bi-pin SOB
tubes! (Some bi-pin connectors are push-in, not common, but much
better than the twist variety)

I seem to have a problem with the pins, too. I like those single pin
spring loaded types a lot better. I'm always afraid I'm going to pop
the glass, and have it rain down on me.

Had exactly that happen to me once.

I worked in a packaging factory in the early-'80s. My machine had a pair of
single-pin 8-footers above the takeoff section. One day, while incautiously
lifting and raising some very large corrugated sheets, I felt a thump,
heard a heard a CRACK-tinkle, and it suddenly got a lot darker. I instantly
knew /exactly/ what had happened, dropped the load and sprinted out of
there. Just in time.

It took me fifteen minutes to clean up the glass and powder, replace the
bulbs and continue my work. Got LOTS of respect for those bulbs now...

I think it was actually a 6ft lamp as was suggested here (sans the racist
remark)

And an assumptive remark at that. I have an Irish last name, so that
automatically makes me a Christian? Umm, no, not hardly.

Doesnt even, necessarily, make you WHITE.

Besides him possibly being grounded, if the voltage and frequency is
high enough, you don't even need a ground path. Imagine a little static
shock you often get in the winter, then think of that same little zap
hitting you 120 times per second, or if it's from an electronic ballast
the frequency goes up to 20,000 Hz (40,000 times per second) or higher.

I think I will wait for the Cal OSHA report. It will even have

Like Steve, what's to like...like my daughter (17) like uses less
likes than you, like, do! Like, what the...?

This habit started in California (I believe) and spread on campuses
like a virus. We have been hearing "like" this and "like" that for 30
years.
Now you hear moms of teens talking "like" this!
Our kids sound as if they were idiots!
Don't agree! Ploink Me!

Let me rewrite that using the proper English. I used the word "like" too
many times, but not in the Valley Girl sense:

Great minds think alike. I'm old school, so I tell them. It's a situation
similar to not enjoying a restaurant because you don't get good food or
service, and not going back. I prefer to tell the people
that I didn't enjoy the service or the food, and that I won't be back
rather than just vanishing.

I disdain the people who use the same words repeatedly, or use yo or you
feel me or you know what I mean. I know better, but above I just forgot my
best English teacher, Mr. Beatty, and got all absorbed in Usenet and casual
writing.

I was agreeing that I would rather announce that I am plonking someone and
give a reason than use the new Netiquette suggestion of plonking with
announcing the reason.

Sorry you misread my intent, or I did not state it properly.

I shall now fast for a week and self flagellate, and wrap a piece of barbed
wire tightly around my thigh like the guy in The Da Vinci Code. I don't
know if it will make me feel any better, but perhaps you will just knowing I
am properly chastised.

'tmclone' does not sound Irish?
But one Irish is probably much like another?

use for sheep in Ireland: wool.

Sure there is.
But all competent journalists are unemployed.

Cuz, well, iny moron can cull press releases, and special interests as often
as not submit "the article" pre-written, pre-formatted down to the
column-inch, so all's the "journalist" has to do is add his byline.

I love reading the NYTimes Book Review as well.-- half those goddamm book
reviewers are just profiling themselves, and/or are tyrna show the world
they know more about the subject than the author they are reviewing.

The dick-waving never ends.

Heh, I was wondering about those 16-footers myself.
