Default Stump Removal

Several months ago I read that the best way to get rid of a stump is
to burn it out. Drill holes, fill with kerosene, etc.

I've got a 4' - 5' diameter stump from a water oak that's about 6"
above ground level. This morning I went to Home Depot to buy a bit
and found that there were more choices than I was expecting. For this
application what type of bit would be best? Are 1" holes appropriate?
How many? How deep?

In general, what applications do you use an auger for and when do you
use a spade bit?

You need a long auger for this, you need the self feeding and chip
removal. The spade is cheap and works for thin boarda thast are dryid
wood. 1" might work for kerosine, but you need at least 1.25" if you
are using sticks (1 1/8 diA) to sped the job.

4-5 ft. dia oak would make a nice kitchen chopping block or table top if you
have the woodworking tools. I've seen some coffee tables make out of large
tree stumps or trunks going for over $5,000 a while ago.

In any case, I use my auger for fence post holes and a spade bit with my
jackhammer for breaking out concrete or digging around tree roots. If you
were referring the wood boring spade bit then you need a drill to bore holes
in you tree stump.
