Several months ago I read that the best way to get rid of a stump is
to burn it out. Drill holes, fill with kerosene, etc.

I've got a 4' - 5' diameter stump from a water oak that's about 6"
above ground level. This morning I went to Home Depot to buy a bit
and found that there were more choices than I was expecting. For this
application what type of bit would be best? Are 1" holes appropriate?
How many? How deep?

In general, what applications do you use an auger for and when do you
use a spade bit?
