... What is the best insulation to use in a new home? Fiberglass bats, blown celulose, sprayed foam? Has anyone used isynene or Sealection? Where are you and what are you trying to achieve? The material you use depends upon how much R-value you want for a given thickness of wall or ceiling. The most economical and commonly used material for new houses is fiberglass batts. A 2x4 wall can get you R-13, a 2x6 wall can get you R-19. Blown cellulose is not usually used in new construction. Foam, both rigid and sprayed, have a higher R-value per inch put is more expensive than fiberglass. -al sung Rapid Realm Technology, Inc. Hopkinton, MA |

What is the best insulation to use in a new home? "Best" for what? Is the new home of wood stud construction? Fiberglass is widely used in new construction, easy to put up while the walls are open. Blown is a way to retrofit insulation into closed walls, why use it if the walls are open, what with the concerns over whether you are geting a good fill around wires, etc. Foam - panels? Are you gonna have to fit them between the studs, or are you running them over the outside of the house? What's your outside finish, do you have to nail thru the foam? Fiberglass is so widely used for a reason. Do you have a reason NOT to use it? (If "new home" is not wood frame with otherwise unused wall cavity - ignore post.) I used Blown in Celulose on top of 6" fiber glass batts and I found it to be the biggest mistake of my life. Before I did this I had to dust about once a month or longer and now I have to dust just about every 3 to 5 days. Before my air cond. filter would plug up about every 2 months or longer. Now it plugs up just about every week or two. The stuff that gets into the house is a gray fiber that looks just like the the blown in fiber of the cellulose used in the attic. So i would say use anything but this stuff. TURTLE |
