Maytag Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Maytag(r) and Jenn-Air(r) brand dishwashers

Units: About 2.3 million

Manufacturer: Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa

Hazard: Liquid rinse-aid can leak from its dispenser and come into
contact with the dishwasher's internal wiring which can short-circuit
and ignite, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 135 reports of dishwasher
fires, resulting in product and/or property damage. Four injuries have
been reported, including three reports of smoke inhalation and one
serious hand laceration when operating a fire extinguisher to put out
a fire in the dishwasher.

Description: The recall involves Maytag(r) and Jenn-Air(r) under
counter or portable plastic tub dishwashers. The dishwashers have
black, white, almond, bisque and stainless steel front panels. The
following model and serial numbers are printed on a label located on
the dishwasher's plastic frame on top of or to the left of the door
opening. Consumers should contact Maytag to determine if their
dishwasher is included in this recall.

Sold at: Department and appliance stores and by homebuilders
nationwide from July 1997 through June 2001 for between $370 and $800.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these dishwashers,
disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit
breaker controlling it and inform all users of the dishwasher about
the risk of fire. Contact Maytag for either a free in-home repair, or
a $75 cash back reimbursement following the purchase of a new
Maytag(r), Jenn-Air(r), Whirlpool(r) or KitchenAid(r) dishwasher.
Consumers should not return the dishwasher to the retailer where it
was purchased, as retailers are not prepared to take units back.

Consumer Contact: For more information, contact Maytag Corporation at
(800) 675-0535 anytime, or visit the firm's Web site at
www.repair.maytag.com

The recall does seem to be a little too gentle on Maytag, doesn't it?
$75 off of a new Maytag? That actually PAYS them for screwing up. The
in-home repair is the way to go. While the Maytag repairman is fixing
your dishwasher, snatch his wallet!

I guess the Maytag repairman won't be lonely for a while.

I tried calling the recall hotline, what a joke. You enter your model
number and serial number, then they transfer you. I waited for one hour
on hold, and no one picked up. I called again, and finally got someone,
who told me that they had technical problems and to call back tonight,
or to go use the website. If you go to the website, you enter all your
information, and at the end they tell you "The Online Schedule Service
Application is currently unavailable. Please call the Maytag Recall Team
at 1-800-675-0794 Monday-Friday, between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. EST for
assistance."

Time for a class action lawsuit.

Just make sure you are the one with his name on the suit. You and
your lawyer will be the only ones getting anything worthwhile. The
rest of the 'class' will get 75 cents off the price of some
dishwashing detergent.

I too am a winner. I have a builder's grade Jenn-Air that frankly is a
piece of junk! Had to laugh when I saw the prices being $360.00 or so and
up. I doubt if our builder paid more than $100.

I bought the Maytag MDB9100, which at the time was one of the highest
rated machines. I paid $430 for it, after the various discounts from
Sears and various rebates, but the MSRP was $600.

The wash quality is fine, much better than the Whirlpool that it
replaced. I wanted a machine that had the "sanitize" feature, and a
water heater.

The racks are beginning to rust out, but other than that I can't
complain. I performed surgery with some heat shrink tubing and some wire
cutters, and it's about time to do some more bypass surgery soon.

I'll pass on the $75 rebate option. If they had made it $200 I might
have considered a replacement.

Your situation would be entirely different than my own. It certainly sounds
like the free repair would be the way to go for you.

Me, I'm looking for a replacement (I think). I've always hated my Jenn-Air
builders grade, but didn't want to upgrade until it died.

I'm thinking of replacing it with a Kitchen Aid... maybe...

I had a GE builders grade in a rental condo that I own. The builders
grade appliances are always the cheapest that they can get away with,
though amazingly other than the dishwasher and the water heater, they've
lasted for more than 20 years already.

Multiply $75 by 2,300,000 and, suddenly, the cost to Maytag
doesn't seem that small, does it???

Look at it from the customer's point of view and multiply the actual
cost of the machines by the same number and you see how small the
amount that Maytag pays really is.

Even though my model doesn't seem to be affected by the recall, I've
had a few things happen that make me question the safety of this
machine. Mine is the PDB3600AWE, purchased approximately Dec, 2001.
I've since had the timer replaced, some scorched wiring behind the
control panel was repaired, a pump seal, door seal, and a little vent
underneath the tub that always did leak. This leak was very near some
electrical connections! The damn machine always did seem to be a
"fussy" unit... I've never thought much of Maytag appliances and this
recall has only confirmed those feelings. I'll never buy another
one... Typical Made-In-China junk, that's all it is today.
