I need a cable or wiring insructions, if possible, to adapt a 9 pin serial
computer port to an RS232 type male connector. The cable is needed for an automotive diagnostic tool I have and is used for loading software updates from my computer to the tool. The mfr. wants $55.30 for this thing and I believe I can build it or find it cheaper somewhere else. Struck out at the local radio shack. Thanks for any help. Garrett Fulton There is no such thing as an RS232 connector, I assume you mean DB25 connector? Where does this diagnostic thingamajig plug into? Serial or parallel port? The diagnostic tool has a 25 pin male connector, it's made for a parallel port it sounds like. Raymond |

Raymond It goes from the 9 pin serial port on my computer to a female socket on the top of the tool that looks like a big telephone connector. I probably didn't have the terminology right. All I've been able to find doing an internet search is 9 pin serial port to USB adapter cables and those won't work on this thing. I let a friend borrow the tool to read the codes on his car and don't have it with me today. I believe the telephone looking socket has 9 pins also. Garrett Fulton Ahhhh okay, it does sound like a custom cable then. The phone jack somes in even number of pins from 2 to 10. Phones use 4 or 6 pin, 10baseT Ethernet uses 8 pin jacks. They do make a 10, but it's not used much. Does you friend have the cable, or do you even need the cable except to download to your PC? Somewhere, there may be a wiring diagram for that cable (not likely), best bet is to find someone with the same machine, and copy their cable, or bite the bullet if all else fails. And write down the specs in case the cable is ever lost. Raymond |

I'll just order it and pay the money, I reckon. Just look it up on Google...It sounds like you need a serial adaptor that
gets you from DB9 to RJ11...a fairly common adaptor in the 80's...try calling a couple of surplusers... Here is one... http://www.altronics.com Usually this is an adaptor and you just buy the length of cable you need...hope this helps....Ross "gfulton" wrote in message ... I went ahead and paid the $55 and ordered the cable the day before your post. I need it pretty quick anyhow as I need to use the scanner and can't until I've loaded the update. Garrett Those 9 pin to RJxx adapters typically come unwired. You have to configure them for your own use, which cannot be determined without a wiring diagram. Raymond |
