Default sci.electronics.repair Spam.

Hello to all:

sci.electronics.repair is a favorite Usenet group I like to lurk.
IMHO some of this group's spam postings are beyond excessive. I am
loath to impede good commerce and I wish that those who have spammed
this group would have posted to much more appropriate commerce groups
instead.

1.) Has anyone had success reporting inappropriate postings through
Google using their reporting tool?
2.) Has anyone found an effective Usenet filter set against
spammers if we are just using our typical IE and Firefox browsers?
3.) What else could we reasonably do?

Thank you to all.

Only if ~999 other people also do it
--and all the jerks have to do then is sign up for a new account.

Since Gmail's CAPTCHA was recently cracked,
they can now automate their sign-ups.
In short, it's a waste of time.
Google Groups has to do something *different*
like present a CAPTCHA **each** time someone wants to post.

Instead of bothering with the anti-spam idiots at Google,
look at the headers. Do a reverse DNS on the Posting Host
and report the jerks to their providers (ISP or NNTP provider).

and Firefox browsers?

Gecko + GreaseMonkey can do a little (see link below).

3.) What else could we reasonably do?

Treat Usenet like it's Usenet
and abandon Google Groups--if that is an option for you.

Often the IP address does not resolve; instead do:
whois -h whois.arin.net ip addr
-- which may point to apnic.net or other authority
so you may need to repeat the lookup accordingly.

Then you will need to report to the owner of the IP block.

We discussed all this last week. O.E. has perfectly adequate tools for
rejecting these postings either on a per mail basis, or by sender, or by
sending host. All that's needed is a little lateral thinking on what to put
in the filter. The O.E. "Message Rules" can be set to filter on subject or
sender, and there is no fundamental limit on how many parameters are put
into the filter. My sci.electronics.repair is not troubled by the spam.
Others also suggested alternative solutions using third party software such
as News Proxy, but the O.E. message rules are simple to implement, and work
just fine to stop the problem.

Thanks to all for your thoughtful posts. I tried Trollkiller with my
Red Hat Linux (RHEL5.1) based Firefox 1.5.0.12 browser and found that
the Trollkiller .xpi probably wasn't meant to be compatible. I know
that my browser version from the Red Hat folks is the latest they have
but the Mozilla folks are already releasing version 3. Pan looks
interesting and I might look at it next. I see that even this thread
got spammed.

Pity...

FWIW, I notice that I am unable to use the aoie.org public news server
to post to sci.electronics.repair. The error message says ...

"Server aoie rejected post to newsgroup(s) sci.electronics.repair:

It's just as well. I'm not the only one who's blacklisted aioe articles.

The administrator there is a moron.
The sci.electronics.* hierarchy got a bunch of forgeries recently
--all from one aoie.org user (a teenager with no supervision).

The guy that admins that domain got many complaints
--but didn't terminate **the spammer's** access.
It appears *this* is what he did instead.
(The forgeries have stopped.)

Perhaps this is all he could do.
Perhaps aioe doesn't require users to register.
Perhaps the forger kept re-registering.

(The forgeries have stopped.)

They stopped appearing HERE. They may be still ongoing elsewhere.

This group is NOT the only group that was being trolled via aioe.

See 'AIOE abuse' on news.admin.net-abuse.usenet

For 2 computers to communicate
they must identify themselves by IP adddress.
An admin can simply configure a server
to refuse to acknowledge a computer with a rogue IP address.

Of course. However IP addresses can be changed. If one 'owns' a block of
addresses, one can hop around within the block.
If one's ISP issues IP addresses via DHCP, releasing the current IP address
will often get you a new address from the pool.
If one is using dial up, dropping connection and redialing will usually get
a new IP address.

The IP address is NOT a foolproof way of blocking.
The botnet epidemic is a response to attempts to curb spamming by
blocklisting.

An admin can simply configure a server
to refuse to acknowledge a computer with a rogue IP address.

That assumes that the admin knows how and has the desire. However, even
that fails if the miscreant finds an open proxy and routes through it.

I didn't say that aioe did all that could have been done, just that he may
have done ALL _HE_ could do.

In any case, it certainly made the problem go away and as aioe is HIS
property, how he chooses to make the problem go away is his choice.
If you don't like how he runs his service, don't use it.
