Hi,

I have a Hotpoint freezer rza30 model.
The high temperature led comes on when it's plugged in and it's not
freezing.
There is a 25 ohm resistor block accross the condensor motor which
measures 25 ohms so it looks ok. There is also a 4 mf ac capacitor
across the mains input into the freezer. The capacitor has 2 terminals
coming out of the housing so I disconnected it and measured the
capacitance accross it which always measures 0. I am assuming this has
gone faulty. There is not really a lot else that I can see that might
me faulty. Any suggestions and am I on the right track?

Not enough clues and observations in your posting.
If the compressor motor is running then you do not need to look at the motor
or associated components.... it might be low on freon.
If the motor tries to start but doesn't then look at the capacitor and/or
resistor.
If the compressor motor runs but does not run long enough then look at the
thermostat.

What are you using to measure the capacitor?
If using an Ohmmeter it only measures resistance not capacitance.
Make sure the light goes off. I had on the switch was bad and with the
inside light on it wouldn't get down to temperature.
Also check fan(s) if it has them on the outside on the coils or
compressor and inside in the freezer.
Could be the self defrost heaters are staying on all the time or justto
long.possible cause as someone else mentioned the thermostat or timer.

The motor does not start. In fact the unit might as well be dead except
that both the power led and "temp High" led come on.
The freezer is only 18 months old.
I cannot see a thermostat anywhere. Does this 25 ohm resistor serve

No. It's often hidden inside the back on vertical models. The dial could be
around the back also. Owner's manual?

Since you have a capacitance meter and you are not getting any reading
best bet the starting capacitor is your problem.
Some places that sell parts will test the old for you.
I'm not sure about the 25 ohm resistor block. Does the block actually
state 25 ohm or is that just the measurment your getiing?

I will have a look again and see if I can find the thermostat. There is
a dial
on the front panel that controls the temperature " 1 to 5" but I
presumed this was just another variable resistor. I'm afraid the owners
manual is not very helpful.

The dial is not a variable resistor, it connects to the themostat. Well I
suppose it *could* be a variable resistor in part of an electronic
thermostat but I've yet to ever see one like that. The compressor can only
run at one speed, it's either on or off depending on the temperature inside.
Check for voltage at the compressor, if it's there then the thermostat is
trying to turn it on.

Never seen an electronic one. It should be a mechanical thermostat. I'd take
a look at that - see if something is damaged. Also, if you have a 'hot'
light there should be another 'stat somewhere IMO.
