Study helps. There are many elements concerning proportion, some involving
mathematics, that can be learned. Like making a chest of drawers with
larger (vertical measurement) drawers toward the bottom.
Some, like Maloof, have a natural feel for these things much more than
others. Some folks are hopeless in this regard but can still be great
craftsmen.
