Default What do you make from 6 inch diameter cherry logs?

I have a 3 foot long and a 5 foot long piece of cherry log that I didn't
scrap when I was trimming a fence row. My total experience with bowl
turning is one 9 inch diameter simple bowl of willow.

What might one make from the subject logs? I cut them about 4 years
ago. I painted the ends of the larger immediately, but not the other
one. There is checking on that shorter one, but not too bad. I'll saw
into it when it thaws.

I'd make these: http://www.alaska.net/~atftb/fullsize/potpourri.jpg

You can get the pewter lid from Lee Valley or Packard Woodworks for
around $3+ each...

Kevin... I'm gonna use your post to reply to the OP.. hope you don't mind..

Spaco.. Sorry, for some reason your post got to me with just the subject and no
body... I didn't realize that it was a serious question..

I'd probably use it for goblets and boxes... both are really nice in cherry and
those pieces sound like the perfect diameter..
Have fun with it, I have cherry envy now.. ;-[

I'd make sushi platters - I think htere is a photo of one in the gallery on
my web page (www.wbnoble.com) - if not, take 8 inch long section of the log,
saw down the middle (right through the pith), mount on lathe with the flat
part facing headstock and turn a foot and graceful curve - foot will act as
tennon for chuck - reverse, shape top (don't get whacked by hte edges), sand
and finish

Default What do you make from 6 inch diameter cherry logs?m Thanks.

Thank you all for your input. I will go out there and cut some up
today. I think I will put the pieces into a plastic bage, not tightly
sealed, now that they are inside.

Great idea, Pete!
just drop that plastic bag in a box and send it to me.. I'll save you from
having to get your shop all dirty and your turning tools dulled...

NO, don't thank me...... Hey, what are friends for?

I've been turning some wine bottles lately. Not too complicated and my wine
drinking friends seem to appreciate them. A couple are filling blanks in a
wine rack my friend can't afford to fill. (We built it to fit a particular
space not thinking that it would end up with capacity for 72 bottles!)

Checking in a bit late - but you can always slice off rounds to
make coaster sets - not as much challenge, but still something nice
to do. Some folks might even prefer if you leave the bark on
the edges.... assuming it's still there. Then you can do lots of things
to decorate the faces, such as woodburning, decoupage, laser
etching, marquetry (inlay), etc. Initials, logos, pictures....

Just some thoughts.

Do you use PEG to prevent them from splitting when they dry?
