The rod is 3/4 " x 18" with a 3/16" hss cutter. I have yet to make a
handle for it but will eventually. Will probably make another one
fitted with a 1/4" bit.

Next, I have to check out your website again as I freehanded this one
but would benefit from the consistency gained by your suggestions in
regard to sharpening jigs.

I tried to have a look, but am unable to get to it, Rogers has decided
in cahoots with Yahoo to deny us access to most newsgroups, even if
that was included with the contract.
Even with this group I have to go through Google to get here.
Them being unable to bombard us with advertising is probably a sore
point to them.
If you and anyone else has a way to post pictures on an website other
than the news groops, that would bypass their attempt to shackle us to
their boards and ads.

Thanks Lenny, the picture makes more sense now. I use a lighter shaft, 1/2",
on the 3/16" tools and a 5/8" shaft on the 1/4". I think it lets me get a
bit closer for cuts inside a bowl. The first thing I do for an edge is to
use a rough grind stone to give a 45* angle and then use the fine stone to
refine the edge and round it a touch. I use jigs for the latter but free
hand is not hard.

To be honest, I had planned for this one to get the 1/4" bit but I was
so anxious to try it out that once I got it drilled enough that the
3/16" bit would fit I stopped. I do have a 5/8" shaft waiting in the
wings. When I get another chance perhaps I'll prepare that one for the
smaller bit and redrill this one for the 1/4".

Yes Darrell has a wonderful website with info and not just for the
"newbees", I have been there many times, down to earth info,no bs and
pushing some fancy high priced "new tool, gadget" like others, just
help yourself info.
I made a boring bar couple of years ago, after a article that I saw in
fine woodworking, I used a 1" square steel property stake, that was
taken out by a dozer as they were widening a nearby road.
I sawed out a slice and then clamped a 3/8" tool bit in there, with 2
bolts, and just out to one side,so as to try to control the amount of
wood the tool cuts.
I really have to watch it or it will hog so much that either I can not
control it, or it will tear the turning right out of the chuck.
The lesson is next one I make, the bit is going to be smaller, so I
will be able to better control it, making it bigger is not always
better.

However I am all for freedom of expression, and that is what I like
about this rcw group.
You saw I'm sure the latest rucus in the news, and I do not want to go
in to this here it's not the place for that, however there are powers
out there that want to control what you read see and say, where and
when and how, etc.
Just go an Email of a lurker that is unable to post here, only read,
and there are probably many more, we just don,t know how many just got
knocked off by the latest one from Rogers and Yahoo.

I know some have used the Easy2Upload with sucess, and it has a link
there. Missing from that list was

www.photobucket.com

and

www.flikr.com

The last two are being used a LOT by folks on other NGs and forums and
they seem pretty happy with them. I know Flikr was just acaquired by
Photbucket, but they still seem to make their services as stand alones,
even though in some cases they are cross linked.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your ISP, but this may make a
nice workaround for you. I had the same problems for years when I had
AOL, and those weasels finally relented and made it so you could read
and post from their service. However, I left soon after. I just kept
the old address and post through Google.

Let me know if you need some editing software and I will post some
links. There is some really neat free stuff floating around these
days.

Thanks for the site addresses, but I think I did not explain my problem
well.
I do have a website at .Mac (Apple) and have my picture albums there,
also a gig for keeping backups safe etc., no problems there.
The problem I have is not being able to contact or get to any web
address that starts with "news".
So if anyone puts up something on any of those sites, be it pictures or
messages, I can not get to it.

OK, Leo. I got it now.

I have Yahoo DSL, and have had it for a couple of years. I like the
service a lot, but the newsreader is so hard to set up it isn't worth
it. It ticks me off as it is supposed to be part of the service, but
when I called for tech support they automatically send you to the
Phillipines for help. And while those young ladies are charming and
polite as can be, they don't have a remote clue of how to set up the
service.

Like you, I wish I could see more of other's work. But until I feel
the need to spend a few MORE hours straightening that out, I wil just
have to hope it more of the pics are posted to a free hosting service.

I too became very unhappy with the newsreaders that were available. Several
years ago, I was introduced to a service in which you read the news groups in
your web browser. Originally, it was a free service, but it changed hands and
became a pay service. The price still isn't that high and the reading is so much
better than the newsreaders that I feel it is worth it. I use www.newsguy.com
and highly recommend them. You still don't get photographs, because
rec.crafts.woodturning is a text only newsgroup.

If you want to see others work, WoodCentral has a message board for woodturning
that has a lot of photos and much greater activity than rec.crafts.woodturning.
Another possibility is to get recommended to WOW, there are more pictures there
than most have time to view.

newsreaders are easy to replace. By definition, they all use the same
protocol when they connect to the news server. If one gives you
problems, use another.

The news SERVER is different. My ISP provides one for me as part of
the service. If I don't like that one, I can buy service elsewhere, or
find a free service elsewhere.

If your server provides the binary newsgroups, you are all set.

I am on cable and the cable company Rogers, and Yahoo have started a
service for which users have to pay extra and they make it impossible
(try to) to use the newsgroups, where they are not allowed to put all
their advertising in.
It is not so that things are free, I have to pay more than $100.- every
2 months, and to ad too that they increased the monthly cost while they
dropped the newsgroup service, witch was "free" and included in the
agreement.
Yes I still am able to get to the wood turners group through Google,
but I don't like it .

I googled this and saw some of the controversy.
I tried to find info on their services, but failed.

I found a page on free usenet servers

At worst case, you can spend $10 a month and get a commercial service.
