Advice Needed.Hollowing Tool
Hi
I am considering my first hollowing tool. I need one for hollowing out vases etc. Any suggestions for a good basic hollowing tool? Should be able to reach a 6 or 7 inch depth! Keith In Newfoundland Member of the AAOW |

Hi Keith
Go to Darrells web site and make that oland tool, also the Termite tool from Oneway is a good tool to use for cutting end grain wood and cleaning up the bottom, Lee Valley sells them also, or get just the Termite bid and make your own handle, I find the original one a bit thin, so You could make it a little heavier. http://aroundthewoods.com/ Have fun and take care Leo Van Der Loo Keith Young wrote: Hi I am considering my first hollowing tool. Keith,
Check out this website and the reviews. Excellent source. http://www.fholder.com/Woodturning/lyn.html Go down the page to the "Opinionated........" Depending on what you are turning, there are dozens of choices - each with different size and shape capabilities. All systems will set you back $100 or more, so borrow tools to try them. I have many, many tools. Right now, for pieces from 4" to 10", I like the Derry laser hollowing rig. For smaller, I like the Packard mini set and the Kelton 1/2". I like Jordan tools too. I just finished making a Feltmate/Oland tool (my trademark!grin).
Got maybe $5 or $8 in the whole deal. Works great! AND you can make them any size you need (within reason of course). the one I made is using a 1/4" HSS tool-bit from Enco (currently on sale for less than a dollar I believe). Ground a 45deg relief angle, then kinda pointed/rounded it off. Put it into the end of a piece of 5/8" CRS from the local hardware store. You can stop there or "get fancy" by adding a wooden -handle. It is really pretty amazing Bill W |
