I'd been told it was to space out the letters so they were less likely to
get jammed - ie no common ones together.

Think the speed you type is down to skill.

It was a very practical solution to a very serious problem. When
typewriters were first made, there was a real problem with people typing

Of course, now that technology has moved on, it's a PITA, but it was a
good idea at the time
