IME, if you don't use a particular feature of a new car within a
couple of months, you never will ...

Well I dunno. It was only after I realised that my XK8's nearside
mirrors wouldnt go back after being knocked that the Jaguar dealership
asked why I hadnt cycled the powerfold mirrors...What power fold mirrors?

Don't they auto-fold when you turn off the ignition?

No, they didnt back then (1990s). Mostly they do on the later models -
or it is at least a configurable option.

I have to hoid the remote lock button on the key for a brief period to operate the fold in mirrors when locking the car. Gves me he option. They can of course be operated by switch inside the car

What is the significane of the gauge at the bottom of the speedometer
headed 400. It only reads with the engine off but the ignitionon on..

Could find no reference in the handbook

Could be a time/miles to service indicator.

Much too short for that.

******** it is.

No modern car has service at 400Km or 400 miles. stupid.

He could have been watching the figure count down for ages and only
now has decided to ask the question when it has got close to service time
.

Pity about the fixed 400 on that scale, stupid.

The OP has discovered what the indication is for, and it does appear to be
a range indicator which up thread you said was unlikely.

But to get back to service interval displays you clearly think that they
must stay fixed.
With modern condition based servicing to use BMWs terminology different
items have different service periods according to how they are wearing
rather than a whole car service at X 00000 miles

Choosing the option eg brakes will indicate based on how the vehicle has
been driven how many miles are left before the brakes may need need
servicing.
Say you have a look and the system displays that based on the driving style
and wear so far it indicates 1800 miles left .
Clearly as you continue the system counts down from that 1800 to 0 at some
stage it will pass through 400

Such a simple concept but your Aussified brain could not see it.

Its slightly more than a range indicator. It shows what effect the current journey (set up on the sat nav) will have on the overall range. It high lights in red when engine is turned off otherwise it is in grey. Strangeley useful once you understand what it is doing.
