Buses use at least six times the fuel a car uses.

They also generate a lot more particulates than a car and wear on the
roads with consequent repairs and pollution.

Around here you can frequently see buses with one or no passengers.
Most taxis only have passengers for half the journey.
Even trains run with 10% occupancy a lot of the time.

What's needed is bus drivers on zero hour contracts so they only run the
buses when there are a lot of passengers. That is rush hour and no night
services, no rural services, etc. then the claims about pollution might
be true.
