It seems that we in AU might be getting Lidle, is it worth having?

We have Aldi is it the same thing?

But one of them is kind of a general store more than the other.

That can depend on the particular branch.

With both Lidl and Aldi, larger branches can carry kitchenware,
outdoor clothing, stationary, bike stuff and tools etc. etc.
But with no continuity of supply, with ranges and lines changing
from week to week as posted beforehand on their websites
IME, smaller branches of Lidl may only stock food. The
nearest Aldi to me is smallish but still carries tools. Which
IME anyway are much better quality than what you might expect
at the price.

Similar but in my experience the shopping experience depends very much
on the local management and to some extent the surrounding shops.

I used to prefer my local Aldi but lately it seems that it is too
successful for its own good - too many customers and no time to sort out
the new stock. For a short time they started employing Tesco/Sainsbury
type checkout staff who thought they could take all the time in the
world to serve a single customer. I prefer the no nonsense approach were
the goods go through the checkout at lightening speed back into the
trolley and you pack at the shelf the other side of the checkout, or at
the car boot. None of this crap where you wait behind other customers
while they find their loyalty card, present hundreds of vouchers and and
wait for little bits of paper to support schools etc.

These days I prefer the local Lidl which has a larger store and has
modified its stock type because the surrounding shops are a Farm Foods,
Iceland and a Pound Stretcher who all sell discounted branded goods,
such as a reasonably good tasting coffee.

I've recently visited a large Tesco store and can see why they are
losing trade. I wanted some fresh fruit but found that it was only
sensibly priced (higher than Aldi/Lidl) if I purchased in bulk - £2 a
punnet or £3 for two. The expensive small Sainsbury corner shop local to
me had items cheaper than the large Tesco store.

Quite similar. Google for their website and you'll see the kind of
things they sell. Cheap food, mostly very good quality. The latest trend
is to have their own in=store bakeries. The food items vary according to
the country. You can't get pasties or pork pies in the Netherlands, for
example, nor do British stores sell Dutch-style salted herring.

The tools are usually good too. I have a couple of cordless drills,
various garden implements, a 12V compressor, etc.

You mean Lidl?

Quite similar to Aldi in the UK - both have their strengths and weaknesses.

In the UK, Lidl tend to more things DIY based like tools etc. But only on
special offer, so it's best to get their special offer emails sent so you
can decide if it's worth a visit. Some popular tools etc can sell out very
quickly.

Might also depend on your area. In this part of London, lots of Lidl
branches. But no Aldi - nearest one is many miles away.

Up here Aldi is more prelivant and convient than Lidl. Aldi in
Penrith, Carlisle, Hexham. Lidl only in Carlisle and close to the
city center so a bit of a pain to get to.

It's also a bit like the big supermarkets round here. Lots of big
Sainsbury, but not Tesco. Although the latter did build one recently.
Almost as though there was some secret agreement between them to carve
things up.

But they are building an Aldi in Tooting, which is close enough.
