As far as the ES website is concerned status is OK

but the number of accesses is much reduced (but not zero) since early
this morning.
I'm on VM which is related to Brian's Blueyonder so it could be a ISP
problem?

yes it was unavailable yesterday, then a windows advice notice came up
in the evening saying eternal-september wasn't authorised/recognised.
Ticking the exemption box cured the problem.
This was windows 7, which had automatically updated the day before.

563 and now it's OK.
