Default Corrugated Asbestos Roof - what replacements?

Have a look at http://www.casupply.co.uk/, they have a range of roofing
materials which should cover your purpose. (even if you just look and buy it
elsewhere but I find them cheap!)

Hi

I have an outside loo and a shed both brick built in the garden. They
are joined to the house but you have to go into the garden to get to
them.

I was told by the surveyor when I purchased the house that it had an
asbestos roof which would have to be replaced. The roof is corrugated
(with quite a steep sloping angle) and looks very much like a shed
roof.

Most of the roof structure underneath is rotten and will have to be
replaced as well.

I have read the other posts on dealing with the asbestos safley but my
query is what can I replace the roof with. The only corrugated
roofing that I can find is the clear placstic stuff which is not
suitable since there is a loo as well.

Any help appreciated

I do not think that this is correct. There should be a
council tip within reach that will take this type of
material. He could simply take it there and dump it in
their special "closed" skip.

You cannot take it to the tip, if caught a hefty fine!
It requires professional disposal ie expensive.

Well, you could a couple of months ago - what has changed?

Yes, that does seem to be completely wrong. See:

http://www.oldham.gov.uk/living/green/asbestos.shtml
http://www.nottscc.gov.uk/home/environment/recycling/
factsheets/asbestos.htm

Some councils will even collect it for you:

http://www.york.gov.uk/environment/waste/asbestos.html

There's a "safety" link off that page, too.

http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/wastemanage...s_disposal.php

Google search "asbestos disposal council"

It can be re-roofed with more than corrugated sheet materials. Why not

just
have a proper timber and felt roof put on it. Also, the old asbestos will
have to be removed professionally for insurance reasons.

Erm, I've never read anything anywhere about cement roofing panels
containing asbestos requiring professional removal and nothing also about
insurance stuff. In fact - my council's website says you can take 6 panels
to their 'tip' if you double wrap it and mark it as such.

Bigger quote:
"The transfer stations, which are able to take commercial and
industrial wastes for a charge, are situated in Epsom, Guildford and
Spelthorne.

Up to six sheets of asbestos may be taken to one of the three transfer
stations. Only cement bonded asbestos is accepted at the sites, for
other forms of asbestos a specialist must be contacted for disposal.
Look in the yellow pages under 'Asbestos Removals' for asbestos
specialists."

Does this imply that there is a charge for the disposal of six sheets
of cement bonded asbestos?

When I went (1999), no. Though I didn't know about this six sheets lark.
I took a large water tank, which may or may not have been made of
asbestos but nevertheless, they took it for free and put it in their locked
container.

I may have a need for this facility as I
have a garage to relocate 6m, and gather the roof is no reusable.

Hi,

yes the layoutis just as you have drawn, and it is single pitch.

Originally I was goiing to do the job my self but now have no time. I
have found someone to do it, but I just neeed to confirm to him what
to replace the roof with. Nextto the o/h is a small wooden shed with a
double pitch roof. He suggested using the same type of roofing as
that (felt based I guess) but I was not to convined about the
durability of that. I just went round a fewDIY shops to see what is
availabel but havenot tried buiders yard.

Many THanks

You could use corrugated iron (easiest to get from BMs but
more expensive there than the slitter), or a Fr3nch product
called "Onduline" which is a bitumen-type corrugated sheet.

You could, however, put a slate (or tile) roof on, which
would look better. Is the plan of your house/outhouse like
this?

+------------------+
| | O/H |
| House |-----+
| |
| |
+------------+

or what? Is the roof of the O/H single-pitch, or double-pitched?

Is this to be a D-I-Y?
