Default hardwood bead required

I need to fill in a 17mm x 16 mm rebate in hardwood ("canadian
doorstock") door made for a previous water bar.

Once upon a time a piece of ramin beading would have been ideal, but
ramin is no longer sold or imported (protected species, SFAIUI) & all
beading sections in places such B&Q & Homebase are in softwood.

I am reluctant to use softwood as at the foot of the door I sense it
is likely to soak up water & thus not last.

Any suggestions as to a ramin alternative (and source) please?

TIA

Forget the sheds, go to a proper timber merchant, they will have the
knowledge & the stock.

Yes..but 'real' timber merchants are a disappearing breed. Most now
just sell softwood in standard sizes.

And most specialists in hardwood only want to deal in vast quantities.

It would be most helpful if you could kindly point me towards a timber
yard where I might be able to solve my problem. Anywhere SW of
Maidstone towards Tonbridge and Lewis would be ideal, otherwise most
places in Kent/East Sussex are accessible.

TIA

You don't say where about you are but having contact with several
cabinet makers in Scotland, I know where I would go to ask for a small
piece of hardwood machined to shape. Find yourself the local cabinet
maker.

You could always try a Google search. First hit was
http://www.eastkenttimber.co.uk/

The sheds do stock hardwood mouldings, go & look.

There's a big yard at Cooksbridge, just North of Lewes :

Not being picky honest but Canadian Door Stock isnt hardwood its hemlock
a suitably coated softwood will work fine as indeed would a softwood
or CDS door. and you will get a better finish than any hardwood.

not at all -

but CanadianDoorStock isnt hardwood its hemlock

I should have known that & you've solved the problem :-)

An offcut of good quality parana pine did the job perfectly. It has a
similar grain/texture and workability to hemlock (and ramin).

Thanks.

Hi Jim
try North Road Timber in Brighton - they do a lot of moulding and
shaping including Hardwoods AFAIK:

North Road Timber Co
85-88 North Road
Brighton
East Sussex
BN1 1YE
Tel: 01273 603880

I have been thinking of using them to shape a piece of oak or similar
for a new door step.
