not at all -

but CanadianDoorStock isnt hardwood its hemlock

I should have known that & you've solved the problem :-)

a suitably coated softwood will work fine as indeed would a softwood
or CDSdoor. and you will get a better finish than any hardwood.

An offcut of good quality parana pine did the job perfectly. It has a
similar grain/texture and workability to hemlock (and ramin).
