Hopefully you checked for casualties before posting here?

I got sent home at 1:00, as they closed the site. Someone said
something about an hotel roof blowing off in Blackpool. It was wild
today. But at the start of it I was thinking roofers would get a thin
pay packet this week. Looks like they can make up for it on insurance
work.

We just had roofers start work on Monday (unrelated to current weather).
Scaffolding up Monday, started Tuesday. So they're on site (or will be
as soon as wind abates) and will fix the odd tile problem while they're
up there!

They took our scaffold down this morning having replaced a single
verge tile on a three storey roof, and another on a two storey roof
that broke when the first one fell - with a bit of re-pointing a hip
total bill was £1650 which the insurers thought was 'quite cheap'. 25
years ago the entire roof (all storeys) was replaced off a ladder !

I'm sure Building Control surveyors have had a fun afternoon, closing
roads off everywhere and bringing all our towns and cities to a
standstill.

I've been to a bungalow this afternoon where a tree has fallen onto
it. From what I could see, there doesn't look to be any damage. I
couldn't see any broken tiles, and the plastic gutters look like
they'll pop back once the tree's removed. Very lucky for all
concerned, compared to others.

He's been on the phone to me since asking who's going to pay for the
removal of the tree, complaining that the insurance won't cover it
(which is bull**** unless either he's got a cheapo policy that doesn't
cover any claims, or he hasn't got insurance & doesn't want to admit
it), and "I'm on a low income", etc. Rather than, "well, we were
lucky that it didn't come through the roof, and that we weren't in at
the time, and we don't have to spend the night on the in-laws settee,
and there are people a lot worse off than us", etc.

I get home and one of my ridge tiles is sat in my driveway.

In the spirit of your message be thankful your car didn't get
there first.

A big advertising hoarding opposite our office window had a loose
bit waving around in the wind. The fire brigade came down and
sorted it. Tomorrow the firm which owns it will probably follow
up my phone call to them (pre fire brigade showing up).

I got an email from Screwfix suggesting I might want to buy a chainsaw
and a generator.

So did I.

Sounds great. I guess that that's not something you otherwise get to
do very often.

Do you have anything printed on the back of your high visibility jacket
saying who you are?

Otherwise anyone could have fun for a few pounds expenditure at
Screwfix to get one of these jackets,
a roll of that red and white plastic tape, a hard hat and a clip board.
One could go round closing
off roads and causing complete mayhem.

So what was he hoping you'd do? Put a cheque in the post there and then?,
voucher for the night at the Victoria and Albert hotel complete with ticket for
grab a granny night?, act as social worker?

Yebbut, at least your car wasn't parked in the drive.

We were packed ready to go to Welsh daughter's. It would have meant
travelling over the M62 (highest motorway in England, there were accidents),
the Brecon Beacons (bleak at the best of times but our route blocked today)
and along the flooded Wye valley.

Yesterday he was up on the carport roof fixing the panels, good job because
today it would have been ripped off.

Spouse was nervousthis morning, that's rare. So I spent the day dealing with
his new computer, persuading him that new technology is really better and
more versatile than his old stuff, he's finally admitted it - hurrah! And
when his scooter fell over he saw a flat car tyre so we had to go for new
tyres. Now we have to pack the car again for tomorrow. The chickens don't
know if they're coming or going - nor do I ...

But we're safe.

Our local Matalan burnt down a few months ago and they errected an 8' high
plywood fence all around the site while they domolished what was left.

Said fence ended up being blown down over two pavements and a busy road
junction. Three police cars, one ambulance and half the town centre closed
off for a few hours.

The message
from "Mary Fisher" contains these words:

and along the flooded Wye valley.

But not in that order. :-)
