The news.newusers.questions FAQ http://www.plig.net/nnq/nquote.html How to
post to uk news groups http://www.usenet.org.uk/ukpost.html Proper quoting
style explained http://www.uwasa.fi/~ts/http/quote.html

Your ISP should have already told you about these or similar. As a student
your IT department should have done the same.

Well first off you should do a bit of looking around and get the clue
that Google do not provide or even support newsgroups they just leech
off the existing newsgroups, mostly known as Usenet but with several
other additions and local bits and pieces.

Secondly you should consider getting a news client rather than using
Google which doesn't display or format posts to newsgroups properly.

And thirdly you should start by reading something like
news.newusers.questions.

What you ask for is way off topic for this newsgroup and if every new
user here were to ask for and get personal handholding this would cease
to be a DIY newsgroup and become a new user support newsgroup.

I've has a look at your few previous posts and I think I see the problem.
Don't be put off by stroppy so and so's, usenet is a bit boistrous, but most
are far worse than uk.d-i-y they're all pussycats on here!

One thing you have got spot on is 'bottom posting', that is when you have
quoted someone, you put your bit at the bottom so it reads better and is
easier to follow. Also, you post in plain text which is correct.

Generally it *is* a good idea to quote some of the message you are referring
to. Even if it is a new message like the one you made to start this thread,
something you could have done might have been:

example-post-format

Can someone explain to gasman pete
how to post to include what he's
replying to, he doesn't know

Hi all, I am new to google groups and would like some advise on posting

pete

/example-post-format

This can save you an awful lot of typing!
People recognise the bits they've read mainly by virtue of the ''
characters
And can skip to the new bit. But people new to the thread and perhaps where
their news provider has thrown the old posts away, can quickly catch up on
the debate.

Bear in mind that is important to snip the bits your quoting to keep it
relevent and not excessively long.
Most good newsreaders should give you copy of the message you're replying to
as a starting point when you hit REPLY, all conveniently appended with ''
characters.
To reply to a specific post, you probably need to highlight the post and
simply press 'Reply Group'. All newsreaders will vary a little, I don't
know what your using (Outlook Express?).

Oh, you'll get up to speed with the acronyms before you know it too ;-)

HTH (and not too patronising!)

Calm down!
You are already complying with the norm, if you start going wrong someone
will put you right, just don't start replying to ancient (over 3 weeks)
posts as they show up as new threads and **** people off big style.
Aslo your name suggests you are a corgi type person? - this is fine but
don't expect people to pay 7 grand for some thieving ******* to move their
cooker six inches, in other words, don't try to talk anyone out of doing it
themselves or spout regulations at folk - they already know but just don't
give a fook!

The first thing is not to use Google Groups for posting at all. It is
an attempt at a web front end for Internet News (Usenet) and fails
miserably as a means to post to it and to follow threads of messages.

It is valuable to search for previous threads and posts but that is
about it.

Frankly, none of the other attempts at web front ends are much better.

The way to proceed is to get yourself a proper news reader program.
Free Agent is good, and even Outlook Express will do something
passable if used properly.

Then you will need access to a news server. Most ISPs run one of
these included in your subscription - if you look on their support
information web pages, you should find a reference to what to do if
you look for "news", "internet news" or Usenet.

Failing that, you can get an account with a specialist news hosting
organisation such as news.individual.net for a modest sum.

Pete - google for "thunderbird", it's an email / newsreader application,
and it works

there are several other free newsreaders out there too

Whilst bottom posting is better than top posting it's still not correct. Read
the references I gave earlier.

You are not on google groups you are on *Usenet*.

As a student ask your uni/school sysop how to access usenet. See Sig.

--
Dave Fawthrop dave hyphenologist co uk Google Groups is IME the *worst*
method of accessing usenet. GG subscribers would be well advised get a
newsreader, say Agent, and a newsserver, say news.individual.net. These
will allow them: to see only *new* posts, a killfile, and other goodies.

There's nothing about Google groups that prevents you bottom posting
and quoting correctly. There does seem to be a problem, however, with
petty prejudices against people who choose to use it.
