I've has a look at your few previous posts and I think I see the problem.
Don't be put off by stroppy so and so's, usenet is a bit boistrous, but most
are far worse than uk.d-i-y they're all pussycats on here!

One thing you have got spot on is 'bottom posting', that is when you have
quoted someone, you put your bit at the bottom so it reads better and is
easier to follow. Also, you post in plain text which is correct.

Generally it *is* a good idea to quote some of the message you are referring
to. Even if it is a new message like the one you made to start this thread,
something you could have done might have been:

Can someone explain to gasman pete
how to post to include what he's
replying to, he doesn't know

Hi all, I am new to google groups and would like some advise on posting
and replying.
I hope people have a little patience with us ....students....thanks
all.

This can save you an awful lot of typing!
People recognise the bits they've read mainly by virtue of the ''
characters
And can skip to the new bit. But people new to the thread and perhaps where
their news provider has thrown the old posts away, can quickly catch up on
the debate.

Bear in mind that is important to snip the bits your quoting to keep it
relevent and not excessively long.
Most good newsreaders should give you copy of the message you're replying to
as a starting point when you hit REPLY, all conveniently appended with ''
characters.
To reply to a specific post, you probably need to highlight the post and
simply press 'Reply Group'. All newsreaders will vary a little, I don't
know what your using (Outlook Express?).

Oh, you'll get up to speed with the acronyms before you know it too ;-)

HTH (and not too patronising!)
