Default Painting onto new plaster

Please can you tell me what the ratio is between paint and water when
painting onto new plaster. I understand it jusat soaks in so there is
no real point in using 'neat' emulsion.

Thank You

Neil

I heard it's 50/50. What they call in the trade a mist coat or a pi$$
coat.

Hopefully someone can confirm.

No - only the moisture soaks in, so with neat emulsion you'll end up with
a
rubbery skin which isn't properly attached to the wall. Personally I

seal
the wall first with 5:1 PVA, but others prefer 50/50 emulsion & water.

I've heard too many horror stories about using PVA. I use about 50-50
emulsion, possibly tending to more emulsion. I don't measure it very
accurately. I just add in enough water to make it very runny.

Christian.

P.S. For new plaster, use a specialised emulsion, such as Dulux Trade
Supermatt, which is specifically designed for new plaster.

Ive used a 50/50 mix for years without any problems
on newly plastered ceilings and walls.

PVA is ok if the plaster is flaky and needs stabilising.

Or Crown Covermatt, Macpherson's Eclipse. Designed to let any residual
moisture in the plaster escape.

Best of all is EarthBorn Claypaint. So breathable it is as if it is
not there. Ideal for new plaster.

Between 50-25% water. New plaster will suck the water out of the
paint at a very high rate. Also don't paint new plaster too quickly -
allow time for it to dry out first.

How long to leave a skim before painting?

How long is a piece of string ;-). It depends on many factors such as
the thickness of the plaster etc. I would leave it at least two weeks,
preferably more. YMMV.

You can do it within a day or so if you use a breathable emulsion like Dulux
Trade Supermatt. Otherwise, you may have to wait weeks for a standard vinyl
emulsion.

Wait until the plaster is almost white....
On plasterboard about 3-7days, with undercoat and skim about 2-3weeks, but this all depends on the weather and temp.

First coat 50/50 DONT USE VINYL
Then IMHO 75/25 giving the wall atleast 24 hours to dry at around room temp from the first coat.
Third and final coat again after 24 hour drying what ever you like, but I would maybe give another coat of 75/25 if your end coat is vinyl.

Its something you cant rush if you want a decent finish

This has always struck me as somewhat odd. Allow the plaster to dry
thoroughly and then wet it with highly diluted paint ! :-)

Cheers,

I've painted around 10 new-plasterred room in the last two years ir so.

I leave the plaster to dry for as long as opssible (2 weeks or so min), and
then paint it with B&Q's cheapest emulsion mixed with water and PVA - ration
of around (never measured) 5:2:1 Paint:Water:PVA. Once dry I apply the
colour of my choise on top.

Never had any problem.
