Default ADAPT Wheelchair motors to LATHE (?) was...not quite OT

Not to hijack a thread (well, ok....) but I'm currently trying to find a pair of batteries like those used in wheelchairs. Specifically, ES40-12 which is a 40ah unit. Anyone know a good online source?

Mmm... You tried searching Amazon?

http://www.amazon.com/s/175-7818556-...ywords=ES40-12

I may not buy from them but it's always worth searching to get an idea
of price. Reading the reviews can be a big help too.

My link was pretty generic and I think searching Amazon is something in
constant flux...

Part of the problem with batteries is shipping and acid content. I
noticed that lead-acid batteries would be shipped dry when looking for
one to fit my motorcycle. You would have to buy/get the acid locally.
Not a big problem but you should figure that into the price too.

They are usually higher than I want to pay but we have a Batteries Plus
in the area. They can usually order whatever they don't have on hand.

I checked with a big local warehouse with access to both Exide and Deka. They could not get them from either source.

This is what I'll probably order. Looks like it ships ready to go. They are sealed

Just for the heck of it I checked the Batteries Plus site. Several
stores in my area have a replacement on hand for $124.99. Ouch! Your
Amazon deal looks a lot better...

The Battery Plus offering is by Duracell. Might give you something else
to search for. Looks like this:

I can just make out a part number that looks to be "DURA12-44C/FR" in
the top left corner. Looks like Batteries Plus is about the only one
selling it too...

What is the application? If it's a power wheelchair you only need to
pick a size that fits the battery box, if a lathe any large enough
batteries will do. The subtle difference for wet, AGM and gel battery
types is the proper charging method.

Yep, the Duracell thing is going to be more expensive.
I think I'll just order those on Amazon.

I was a temp lab tech at Segway but I never looked into the

I have seen flooded/wet U1 batteries with filler caps on the power

Right. Go over a few big bumps with a wet cell and you end up with
H2SO4 all over the place, eating holes in things. Wish I could find a
decently priced SLA for my riding mower. They're 2-3x higher.

I've never had any problem like that. All my motorcycles have had a vent
tube that routes any acid out the bottom of the bike.

Generic sealed case 235 cca lawn mower batteries sell for $30-40 around
here depending on if they're on sale and who is selling them.

===
Exide®GT-XHD 6-Month Cutting Edge Xtra Lawn and Garden Battery

$36.99

**Price shown is with exchange of old battery**
350 cold cranking Amps at 0 degrees
420 cranking Amps at 32 degrees
38 minutes reserve capacity at 25 A
Maintenance-free calcium construction
Heat-sealed case/cover resists damage
L-type terminals fit most cable assemblies
Polypropylene container reduces breakage
6-month warranty

My similar no-name battery in the mower is at least 7 years old now and
still going strong...

I checked with a big local warehouse with access to both Exide

This is what I'll probably order. Looks like it ships ready to
go.
They are sealed

Just for the heck of it I checked the Batteries Plus site.
Several
stores in my area have a replacement on hand for $124.99. Ouch!
Your
Amazon deal looks a lot better...

The Battery Plus offering is by Duracell. Might give you
something
else
to search for. Looks like this:

I can just make out a part number that looks to be
"DURA12-44C/FR"
in
the top left corner. Looks like Batteries Plus is about the only
one
selling it too...

What is the application? If it's a power wheelchair you only need
to
pick a size that fits the battery box, if a lathe any large enough
batteries will do. The subtle difference for wet, AGM and gel
battery
types is the proper charging method.

Actually, it's something called an American Chariot. Sort of a
Segway alternative sold to police, security, and military about 10
years ago.

I was a temp lab tech at Segway but I never looked into the
competition and am not qualified to say what's safe on such a vehicle.
I have seen flooded/wet U1 batteries with filler caps on the power
wheelchairs I fixed.

"There are two types of lead-acid batteries, wet-cell batteries and
gel-cell batteries. Both may be used in power wheelchairs, however,
manufacturers typically recommend gel-cell batteries over wet-cell
batteries due to environmental and maintenance concerns with wet-cell
batteries."

Right. Go over a few big bumps with a wet cell and you end up with
H2SO4 all over the place, eating holes in things. Wish I could find a
decently priced SLA for my riding mower. They're 2-3x higher.

Odd..all my vehicles use wet cell batteries...no spills yet.

Well..I did have one blow the top off a few years ago..that was
messy...

It mostly splashes drips on top of the battery, causing a resistance
between the battery posts which slowly drains the battery between
runnings. I think I'll try some of that maroon battery protectant
spray to see if I can head that off this year. The battery in the
mower isn't over 3 years old yet, but replacement is due soon.

Of course, if I put a grand in my "lawn", the gopher mounds and ruts
wouldn't be there to bounce me around. I mow out of necessity, not
pride. The entire front yard is now covered in woodchipper chips to
avoid all that yard maintenance crap.

What splashes on top of battery?

When I had the top of my Maza B3000 battery blow off..when I pulled
off the road to see what the noise was and opened the hood..I had a
fish tank where the battery was supposed to be. Top was never found.
Just the full battery case, positive and negative posts standing proud
and still connected..and ALL the plates showing in a shallow bath of
electrolyte. Splashing every bit of water and sodas in the truck
kinda sorta washed off much of the electrolyte..but not..not all of
it. By the time I made it to a battery store, had the battery
replaced and then to a car wash...much damage had been done.

Electrolyte.
