None of the other things you mention like owning pets is a fundamental
American right like the right to bearing arms is. So the issue of guns
is different from your ability or right to do other things. That is why
anything that the government does that may, and I stress the word may,
in any way infringe on the right to own a gun is treated differently
than other things. If any kind of restriction is placed on gun ownership
it raises a red flag to the courts. There is no doubt that putting taxes
on guns or ammo would affect people's ability to exercise a fundamental
right. So it is wise to tread very lightly any time anyone proposes to
do something that might take away anyone's constitutional rights. Taxing
gun ownership would surely do that. Not a good idea.
