Rhodesia? Oh, Gunner, have you been holding out on us?

What was that all about? Were you one of Smith's mercenaries, or were
you a guard for the tobacco smugglers?

I did 6 months as a "security guard on a farm"..they wanted someone with
my skillsets from SEA to lay out and kill "terrorists"..Communist
terrorists or not. So after a bit of this and that..I got disgusted
with the entire thing, broke contract and came back to the US, and never
hired out again. The war was heating up in the early/mid 1970s..I was
there in the last half of 1974 and got more than my belly full of it. I
was up near Lake Mebwu . North Rhodesia in a area not far out of
Bulaya..and ran patrols around the game reserves and the big lakes.

I was a soldier..and a damned good one..and a exceptionally effective
one..but I was never a murderer. Not for my country..nor for money. So I
came home. Its easy to kill, but making sure the right people die..in
that situation..was a right *******. Particularly for someone who had
marched with Dr. King...shrug. Rhodesia turned into a bloody nasty and
exceptionally brutal pool of **** for the next 6 or so years after I
left. Im glad I bailed out when I did. It was getting bad..real bad
before I left..and it got worse...much much much worse......

All I can say is Mr Smith paid well enough. Shrug. And I never ran low
on gear or ammo. Though the food...some of that was a bit hard to get
used to......

But I never did lose my hatred for Communists either..not after SEA and
Rhodesia.

Where were you at?

One could not be a successful Leftwinger without realizing that,
in contrast to the popular conception supported by newspapers
and mothers of Leftwingers, a goodly number of Leftwingers are
not only narrow-minded and dull, but also just stupid.

If I'm being too obscure, that's Navin in the movie "The Jerk,"
starring Steve Martin. Navin was white but he grew up in a poor black
family, and thought he was a black child. He was a complete fool.

I was in Livingstone from '73 to '75. I arrived just weeks after the
zambezi gorge killings (May 15, 1973) where several Canadians and
Americans were shot by Zambian soldiers on the Rhodesian side of the
river. Apparently "their guns were loaded and so were they".

With the border closed, L'stone was litterally the "end of the road"
so there were shortages of just about everything at one time or other.
The political situation was tenuous, and being so close to Rhodesia,
Angola, and Mozambique, as well as Namibia, we did hear gunfire at
night occaisionally.

Beautiful part of the world though - Love to go back to visit. My
daughter dropped in over Christmas a few years back and saw where I
used to live, as well as the school (Livingstone Trades Training
Institute back then)

Travelled down to Chobe Botswana and up to Mbereshi in NorthEast
province (through Zaire - another story).

Were the times wild or mild when you were there?

I attended UTI (Universal Technical Institute) in Phoenix, AZ twice.

and I haven't forgiven myself for it.) recovery.

Plumbing, Construction Technology, Bricklaying, and a few others I
cannot remember.

Mild, mostly. There was a car bombing in front of the L'Stone post
office one afternoon - about half an hour after I had been there.

I did my Automotive Apprenticeship training at Conestoga College in
Guelph Ontario, and 20 years later took my
microprocessor.Minicomputers course from N.R.I in Washington. Been
doing the computer gig for 24 years now.

I moved to electronics QA work for Southcom, Int'l. in Escondido, CA

Yeah, I did the secondary course in Computer Electronics Technology at
Coleman College in San Marcos, CA after hurting my back 27 years ago.
I tried to lift at an extension and tore some muscles. The tow truck
driver was sick so my boss sent me out to do a tow, but the vehicle
had 4 flats. I didn't want to get under the lifted car so I attempted
to assemble the towing dollies at arm's length. I'm 80% better now,
but can't lift anything heavy which isn't right up against my body.

Nobody killed, and no serious injuries. Blew out some windows and
scorched the pavement.

Compared to what was going on in some other parts of the area it was
mild. 40 miles to Angola and Mozambique, and a whole lot worse just
across the bridge in Rhodesia.

Had to be carefull where you went and when, and what you said - but
that's true just about anywhere today!!!

Bad knees and shoulders convinced me to look for a different way of
making a living before hitting 40. Had surgery on one knee back in the
eighties, while still in the trade, and on one shoulder last year.
