What was that all about? Were you one of Smith's mercenaries, or were
you a guard for the tobacco smugglers?
I taught in the former Northern Rhodesia

I did 6 months as a "security guard on a farm"..they wanted someone with
my skillsets from SEA to lay out and kill "terrorists"..Communist
terrorists or not. So after a bit of this and that..I got disgusted
with the entire thing, broke contract and came back to the US, and never
hired out again. The war was heating up in the early/mid 1970s..I was
there in the last half of 1974 and got more than my belly full of it. I
was up near Lake Mebwu . North Rhodesia in a area not far out of
Bulaya..and ran patrols around the game reserves and the big lakes.

I was a soldier..and a damned good one..and a exceptionally effective
one..but I was never a murderer. Not for my country..nor for money. So I
came home. Its easy to kill, but making sure the right people die..in
that situation..was a right *******. Particularly for someone who had
marched with Dr. King...shrug. Rhodesia turned into a bloody nasty and
exceptionally brutal pool of **** for the next 6 or so years after I
left. Im glad I bailed out when I did. It was getting bad..real bad
before I left..and it got worse...much much much worse......

All I can say is Mr Smith paid well enough. Shrug. And I never ran low
on gear or ammo. Though the food...some of that was a bit hard to get
used to......

But I never did lose my hatred for Communists either..not after SEA and
Rhodesia.
