running a war and what it cost in lives sent 900 advisors whose job was
to guide and train. Then left-wing PT boat captain Kennedy, who knew a
heck of a lot about being a big hero but had never before ordered more
than a dozen men into combat sent in 16,000 troops to be cannon-fodder.
Then he got shot and even more left-wing Johnson ****ed it up beyond
all recognition, with more than half a million US troops in-country at
the peak (Iraq troop levels have never gone a third that high). Then
conservative Nixon started drawing down the troop count and finally
declared victory and pulled out. Rah-rah lefties.

There's a reason that it was the Democratic convention that got all the
attention from the protestors, and note how the lefties dealt with them.

That's not quite how it worked. Nixon quietly (some would say
surreptitiously) escalated the war IIRC, but the American public had
given up on Viet Nam (me included at the time - we didn't trust that
the leadership was telling us the truth) and Nixon was politically
forced at home and at the Paris peace talks to end the war.
Republicans of that era were almost as much spendthrifts as the
Democrats. Nixon was a hawk, but I never thought of him as a fiscal
conservative like Reagan. Oy. NO metal content.
