I have a carbide burr for a 1/4" die grinder which I use for gouging
out welds and dimpling bolts before drilling them out. The burr is about 3/8" diameter and 3/4" long cylindrical with a rounded nose. Anyway, I did a dumb thing and loaned it out. Now it has a few teeth missing where it looks like it was dropped or otherwise smacked. Is it still safe to use? I experimented a bit and it doesn't affect the cutting speed or quality perceptibly. I'm just worried about it flying apart or deciding to peel off a row of teeth and fling 'em at me. The twit who broke it moved to another shop, so I can't get a new one "free." If it's still usable I'd like to keep using it. -- B.B. --I am not a goat! thegoat4 at airmail dot net http://web2.airmail.net/thegoat4/ |

Everyone makes a mistake like this exactly once. Now you know never to
loan tools out. I loaned out my dremel and it came back filled with plaster dust. Had to spend an hour blowing and wiping gypsum out of motor windings. Loaned out a drill bit set and it came back with half the bits missing. Now, back to the topic: It still should be usable, although the space where the teeth are missing will probably have a tendency to clog with metal filings. The main concern is with grinding wheels both large and small, which once they have been dropped should be thrown away even if there are no visible cracks. They have a nasty tendency to fly apart when used. |
