It increases property value to have trees, schrubs, and other plants, especially out here in the desert. I plan to have a forest by the time I'm done. You planed the wrong kind of bamboo unless you are planning on shooting a remake of Tarzan. The many types of bamboo fall into two broad categories. The walking kind and the clumping kind. It sounds like you have the walking kind and it will take over your yard. Right up the river from me Thomas Edison was paying the Koreshans to grow various strains (for the light bulb experiments) and we still have good examples of several types. When I stole some shoots for my yard, I was careful to get the clumping kind. They can't control the walking stuff that is still popping up everywhere on the site. |

It's 100 feet from the house so there's plenty of room for it to grow. It's supposed to be able to get six inches around, and 60 feet tall. Right now the biggest diameter is about 1/4 inch. The BIG SHOOTS will open up and won't be as big as they are now, but every year the shoots get bigger. None of it is over six foot tall yet. |

And **** off a pool owner :-) I've been to the Edison place on the river. Grew up near there on the river, further east. The bamboo is in Estero at the Koreshan site. There are also a few patches along the river but they are the clumping variety. I am guessing someone transplanted them. I got mine from what is now the West Bay Club. |

It can attack houses damaging walls. I've seen stands of bamboo just about nuked and grow back. |

Around here the municipalities are banning it because it becomes so invasive. I don't know how to get rid of it but find out and then do it. NOW. You have to saw/chop/cut the bamboo off at the ground and then mow the area whenever the new shoots are 3" high. Eventually it will stop growing back. |

Our neighbor behind us has the invasive bamboo growing in the back corner of their yard. I fight it every year so it won't spread into my gardens raised beds. I've got lots of bamboo canes cut down and dried laying in the back of the yard. They're ok to use for garden posts only after they've completely dried. If you try to use them before that, they'll root and start growing. The stand of bamboo grows as tall as the telephone pole that's right next to it. It's beautiful in it's own right, but a PITA! -- Maggie |

The wall damage was mentioned in the paper by a county councilman as apparently it had happened to her. |

The only trick is splitting it. I used a machete and a maul I made from a 3" Live Oak log with a whittled down handle. (few minutes with a hatchet and buffed it up with a wire cup wheel). Just get the machete started and whack it down with the maul. If I was really doing a lot I would make a machine. |

I did have to cut them in half after I cut them down, though, and then just laid them out to dry. -- Maggie |
