Gibson washer won't drain.
The washing machine circulates but does not drain. It spins
when the basket is full of water. From poking around I find a loose water level hose. I plug it back in and now it does not spin. Normally when the motor spins clockwise it's suppose to drain, but, instead it agitates. I look around again and find a loose, slipping belt. I replace that and still does not spin or drain. I look around and find a motor ground wire completely broken. I haven't reattach it yet. I will post the results soon. Any suggestions why it isn't draining? Technical stuff: The 1980s Gibson's motor belt drives one transmission but the motor's shaft drives the pump with no clutch. Thanks |

Tibur Waltson wrote The washing machine circulates but does not drain. It spins when the basket is full of water. From poking around I find a loose water level hose. I plug it back in and now it does not spin. That should have nothing to do with spinning but may stop the working of the water level control resulting in not washing. BTW. If you did that when the tub was full of water, you may have to remove it and reinstall it once the tub is completely drained before the WLC will function properly. JFYI Normally when the motor spins clockwise it's suppose to drain, but, instead it agitates. I've never heard of a transmission doing the opposite (I don't even see how it's possible). Are you sure you don't have your directions mixed up? I look around and find a motor ground wire completely broken. I haven't reattach it yet. I will post the results soon. A disconnected ground should not stop the motor nor the transmission from functioning. Technical stuff: The 1980s Gibson's motor belt drives one transmission but the motor's shaft drives the pump with no clutch. The most important 'technical stuff' you could provide would be the model number off the machine. You can find tips for locating the model and serial number tag on your appliances in the 'Repair Parts' section of my site linked below. BTW. I don't think you even mentioned whether it is a top or front load washer. Dan O. - Appliance411.com http://ng.Appliance411.com/?ref411=Gibson+washer =Ð~~~~~~ |

I've never heard of a transmission doing the opposite (I don't even see how it's possible). Are you sure you don't have your directions mixed up? I'm sure my directions is correct. The top loading washer's motor pauses for a couple minutes and then spins clockwise or to the right. At this moment it should be pumping water out but instead it makes a gargle sound inside the water pump and also agitates funny. The loose ground wire is put back in and still no change. Whenever it decides to spin, water isn't pump out first. The water pump was removed and inspected and it works normally. Any ideas? The most important 'technical stuff' you could provide would be the model number off the machine. Good tip. I will locate the # ASAP. If you did that when the tub was full of water, you may have to remove it and reinstall it once the tub is completely drained I've empty the tub and plug it back in but I'll make note of this. Thanks. Tibur |

"Dan O." I've never heard of a transmission doing the opposite (I don't even see how it's possible). Tibur Waltson wrote in message I'm sure my directions is correct. The top loading washer's motor pauses for a couple minutes and then spins clockwise or to the right. So it's definitely is turning one way during wash and the other during spin? At this moment it should be pumping water out but instead it makes a gargle sound inside the water pump Sounds like the description of an air lock. Have you checked the water system for signs of a blockage? Excessive foaming of the drain water might cause that as well. and also agitates funny. Funny how? and when, during wash or spin? Whenever it decides to spin, water isn't pump out first. If the pump is attached directly to the main drive motor on your model, it won't. If it is a separate, remote pump you'd have to check the timing chart of the appliance's wiring diagram to see if it is suppose to or not. The most important 'technical stuff' you could provide would be the model number off the machine. Good tip. I will locate the # ASAP. That will at least help us to find out what design of washer we're talking about. Dan O. - Appliance411.com http://ng.Appliance411.com/?ref411=Gibson+washer =Ð~~~~~~ |

So it's definitely is turning one way during wash and the other during spin? That's what it says in the timing chart of the appliance's wiring diagram. Sounds like the description of an air lock. Have you checked the water system for signs of a blockage? Excessive foaming of the drain water might cause that as well. Good idea. Will do this ASAP. and also agitates funny. Funny how? and when, during wash or spin? During the drain or spin cycle, it would agitate unusually. The center of the tub would agitate back and forth normally but the tub would also move in a single direction as if wanting to spin but does so in a stop and go fashion. Whenever it decides to spin, water isn't pump out first. If the pump is attached directly to the main drive motor on your model, it won't. If I understand correctly, you're suggesting maybe a neutral drain cycle missing somewhere? The spin/drain is replaced by the unusual agitation. I may be finding myself taking the transmission apart. I once successfully rebuilt a Honda automatic transmission, but a washer may be harder. If it is a separate, remote pump you'd have to check the timing chart of the appliance's wiring diagram to see if it is suppose to or not. what design of washer I'll jot down the model # at my grandmother's, at next trip. Unrelated story: A neighbor complained of a no spin today, I walked over and did a continuity test on the timer and found melted contacts. A new timer solved it. I wish the Gibson is this easy. Thanks. Tibur |

Gibson washer won't drain.
"Dan O So it's definitely is turning one way during wash and the other during spin? That's what it says in the timing chart of the appliance's wiring diagram. What I was asking was is it *actually* doing it? I know what it is *suppose* to be doing according to the timing chart. During the drain or spin cycle, it would agitate unusually. During spin, it should *not* agitate! The agitator should move in unison with the tub as it spins. The center of the tub would agitate back and forth normally but the tub would also move in a single direction as if wanting to spin but does so in a stop and go fashion. The tub may 'index' (move an inch or two) with each stroke of the agitator when in wash mode. That is likely normal. Whenever it decides to spin, water isn't pump out first. If the pump is attached directly to the main drive motor on your model, it won't. If I understand correctly, you're suggesting maybe a neutral drain cycle missing somewhere? No. On Gibson washers where the pump is attached directly to the main motor, it will spin (although slowly at first) and drain *at the same time*. That is normal (if that's the design of washer it is - which we can't tell without its model number). I'll jot down the model # at my grandmother's, at next trip. It's kind of pointless to go on with this topic until we can find out what design of washer we're discussing. JMO Dan O. - Appliance411.com http://ng.Appliance411.com/?ref411=Gibson+washer =Ð~~~~~~ |
