Default Binaries Allowed?

Are small binaries allowed on this newsgroup to illustrate a question?

I've seen them occasionally. Though I'm not a moderator or anything here.

If you don't have a website where you can post a photo, you should
be able to find a newsgroup where you can post it. It will start
with alt.binaries....

You probably already know this, but I'm posting just in case you
don't.

Why not , you have a question that needs illustration , just post it ,
other people do. Many questions cant be answered, people think
everyone can just visualize their problems. Some have even posted
porno.

I think the main reason no binaries are permitted is because most people
have dial up internet connections and the additional bytes would take up too
much time. Not an issue with broadband. A small binary every now and then
wont hurt.

As I understand it, many newsreaders can not read binary files. So, anyone
who sends binary files, may get to only a few people who have readers that
can read them.

Many news servers do not allow binaries in non-binary news
groups--they simply strip 'em out (so many folks will not see your
attached illustrations).

But then they keep text-only news groups on the server far longer than
they keep binary groups. For example, on Giganews I get 5 months
retention on text-only groups, but only 2 weeks of binary retention
(when last I checked).

If the newsgroup name contains the word "binaries" then they are
allowed. Posting binaries in non-binary groups risks having
servers drop the groups, as many servers have severe limits on
binaries.

Usenet protocol says no binaries in non-binary groups. Some newsgroup
readers are not equipped to download binaries due to slow connections
and other considerations.

One binary may not be a big deal, but if you say yes to one, you have
to say yes to all. This is a very busy newsgroup. Imagine how long
those with slow connections would have to wait to download messages if
many of them had binaries attached.

That could be any of several problems. It does work for me, at least
every time I have tried it. It possible my host was having problems, or
more likely something to do with the software you are using, some
configuration of that software or something on your computer or some
security settings on your computer or your IP. You would not be an AOL
customer would you? It looks like you are using Yahoo for reading the
messages.

Have you had other problems following links or displaying photos on
line?

In general, newsgroups without 'binaries' in their name do not welcome
binary posts of any size/sort. Nor HTML 'Plain text' allows everyone
to view posts and not spend a lot of time (and money, in many
situations) downloading. Many ISPs provide hosting space for posting
graphics, and supplying a link to these is fine. Don't know if there's
an alt.binaries.home.repair, but perhaps you could post a picture to
some generic binary group and refer to it.

Frustrating, I know. It's often easier to draw a picture/diagram than
describe in words. Kind of you to ask first before sending a
5000-'line' post.
