Kenmore/Frigidaire/Electrolux front-load washer -- second time around
About 8 years ago, as I reported here, our
Kenmore/Frigidaire/Electrolux/Gibson (Kenmore model# 417.41142000) front-load washer started leaking greasy crud into the drum and staining clothes. This time there was no leaking into the drum, but it was getting horribly noisy, and when I opened it up water had obviously been leaking out through the bearings and rusty water had been flung around the inside of the cabinet. Rather than buying bearings and seal on eBay as I did previously, this time I bought a set from NMDbearings.com Time will tell how well they perform, how long they last. Perce |

Anyway, this time it's going to be a lot more difficult than the first time, because the shaft and the bearing have locked/rusted together. PB Blaster and hefty whacks with the hammer haven't done the trick yet. Perce |

The drum has metal inserts into which the outer rings of the bearings fit, so I have to get the shaft of the basket free of the inner rings of those bearings first -- and one bearing is inserted from the outside, the other from the inside. So no way to use a bearing puller. If by "new unit" you mean new drum/basket assembly (a few hundred $$), then that would be a waste of money. New washer? Maybe, if push comes to shove. Perce |

I was thinking that all owners of such washers need to dissemble the machine every month and grease where the bearing meets the shaft. Some emery cloth, and sand the surface also. I've left it "stewing" overnight with plenty of PB Blaster, but it still doesn't move. Perce |

Perce Didn't know that about the plastic. I've had good results with Castle Thrust, from NAPA auto parts stores. Best of luck / results on your repair. The one time I wanted to adjust the tilt level of my vehicle headlights, the adjuster was stuck. Casle Thrust was the only spray lube that helped. I've heard good things about Kroil, or Aerokroil. -- .. Christopher A. Young learn more about Jesus .. www.lds.org .. .. |

I remember my first Chrysler vehicle (1974 Dodge Dart) and I swore I'd never buy another Chrysler. Oh, wait. Your subject line says Kenmore and the message body says Maytag. We like our top load Maytag a bit over a year old. Front-load. We went looking for a Whirlpool (at least in part because they are made -- assembled, anyway -- in the USA), but they wouldn't have what we wanted for another couple of weeks. They said the Maytag (also made by Whirlpool) was built to a slightly higher standard, and they had one in stock. $200 off regular price, and another 10% off for using the store CC. Matching dryer (same deal) due in a couple of weeks. The first load is running as I write this. At breakfast a friend told us that a friend of hers has a top-load Whirlpool and hates it -- all kinds of problems (but fixed under warranty). Perce |
