An internet troll is a person who uses *anonymity* to cause frustration,
anger, impatience or to generally be disruptive for no seemingly good
reason EXCEPT to be that nuisance.

You are anonymous. Does that mean you're a troll?

They are on one end of a pathology continuum that ends with mass shooters
wanting to hurt the society they feel wronged them. It's also represented
in the "fame without achievment" syndrome where people want to be noticed
but really have nothing to be noticed for except their ability to disrupt.

You know you're a troll if you change your email address every week or less.
M...les is one of many who do it. It's almost a rapist mentality in the way
nym-shifters want to force themselves on people. So sad.

Interesting observation. I'd never considered "wanting to be noticed"
as a possible explanation/justification/rationalization for many of the
heinous acts you see perpetrated (I just figured "they're sick")

You know you're a troll if you change your email address every week or less.

(sigh) The fact that they are willing to take that extra effort
suggests there is some VALUE (to them) in their avoidance of
"accountability". I try to make a point of sticking to a single
"means of identification" in each newsgroup and other forum
in which I participate -- LET people decide to avoid my comments
simply by recognizing the name of the author.

It's almost a rapist mentality in the way
nym-shifters want to force themselves on people. So sad.

frown I am very hesitant to draw any analogies to "rape".
I've had several friends who've been raped and it is apparently
a very traumatic experience -- the mere word having very strong
associations. Many years ago, one such friend took it upon herself
to explain to me how the act is perceived, not the mainstream
stereotype (sex crazed madman, etc.).

Of course, I can only relate to this sort of explanation on an intellectual
level -- never having experienced the emotional aspects.

When in school, another friend had a nervous breakdown. She later
was overly sensitive to the word "crazy".

shrug Hard to know what demons folks have locked away in their
psyches...

I should catch a nap before I have to start the day (I hate starting
a day AS the sun rises! : )

Yes, about RoNNN, but my sense is that Muggles
is sincere. Fails to trim text, posting style.
But don't sense Muggles is a troll.

Someone sure lit up the list. I have 185 unread
messages this morning.

Also have seven (7) inches of wet snow on my
side porch. I used a magic marker to put inches
on the face of my snow shovel. Plunge it in,
and read the markings. Seven inches! Gracious.
And last night less than one inch when I went to
bed about 10 PM. The weather guys called this
one totally correctly.

It is interesting, and to me, it makes perfect sense. The need for
attention seems to flow from a lack of self esteem, or maybe a lack of
something in one's personal life. The attention, good or bad, seems to
be the momentary cure I think.

For example: Someone who calls others names,
interspersed with foul language, claims the
other doesn't know what they're talking about,
yet fails to prove that THEY their self knows
anything about the topic or subject matter.

Didn't you post this in the wrong newsgroup, li'l buddy? "Their self"
is saying that you don't know what you're talking about because you
keep proving it. Maybe if you'd shut the **** up about subjects you
don't understand, people wouldn't keep saying that you don't
understand. It's a simple concept, but too simple for a simpleton like
you, li'l buddy.

It's not your "anonymity" that makes you a troll. It's your idiotic
trolling. KNAKJHFD. FCKWAFA.

I don't question the rationale behind the deduction. Rather, wonder
if there is a "conscious" thought given to WHY they undertake these
behaviors. I.e., do *they* know why they are doing it (even if that
means a *little* introspection)?

E.g., does a drunk know why he drinks?

A better approach is to add:

NNTP-Posting-Host = 66.217.179.182

Or, in my case, a *content* filter that identifies folks who resort to
profanity and does this sort of thing *for* you.

I did try to decribe that it's the mentality of a rapist but not comparable
to the act of rape which is obviously much more horrible. But bypassing
filters by name shifting really is at the shallow end of the same continuum:
"I will force myself on you whether you want me to or not." Why anyone
would want to take the chance of labeling themselves as such a vile person
astounds me. And yet, with another email change, that's nearly an
inescapable conclusion.

I've had several friends who've been raped and it is apparently

Yes, and to that end I am sorry if it seemed I was comparing the two acts
(trolling and rape) as equivalent. That was not my intent. I wanted to
note that they are two actions on the same plane of people forcing
themselves on others who want nothing to do with them.

Was it that movie with Glen Close and Michael Douglas with the rabbit scene
where she said "I will NOT be ignored!" Same sort of craziness, I fear.

Understood. I'm not meaning to be critical. Rather, passing along
an "insight" that others (victims) had passed on to *me*!

I think men (nonrapists) tend to see rape as a sexual encounter; victims
see it as an assault/act of violence.

Yes. Though one is a lot easier to IGNORE than the other! :

"Look at me! Look at me!"

Sort of the same mentality as folks who dye their hair green?
(imagine having an intelligent discussion with a "professional"
with green hair!)

Narcissism? Inadequacy?

In the technical venues that I participate, you learn to read damn

hundreds or thousands of hours pursuing a suggestion/idea that
