Hi All,

A funny story. We had a 90 MPH sand storm yesterday.
Blew down my side fences. Then it rained (~35 MPH winds).
So, of course, everyone's power went down. (Not the
funny part, yet.)

In the course of events, someone lost the top off a
rechargeable LED light stake. My wife looking out across
the open field (normally blocked by my fence), saw
a dim eerie white light moving toward her in the pitch dark
(everyone's power was out). Turnout out it was the head
off the light steak rolling in the wind towards her.
The only thing missing was the sound effects. Gave her a
real start!

I caught someone taking a little nap of the earth ride with a Blackbird
(Lockheed SR-71) while driving down that road. Those things are enough to
make you think Battlestar Gallactica just came to town.

In my misbegotten youth I heard rumors of something but I was certainly
something I'd never do. You took one othe those thin plastic dry cleaner
bags and made an X shaped frame out of a couple of balsa spars left over
from your last model project. Then you'd fasten a tea candle to the X and
light it, carefully supporting the bag until your hot air balloon was ready
to fly.

Launch it on one of those almost dead still summer nights when everyone is
out in the yard drinking beer, swatting mosquitos, and swapping stories, and
you could really get the phone ringing down at the cop shop.

It's a good thing the kids today are so busy with their XBoxes.

There was a brothel around that area, something about glowing girls. That's
just south where hundreds of underground tests were conducted.

I was driving on a desolate desert road, and a jet buzzed me. I knew he did
that on purpose. Never forget that one.

I've heard that is possible. I'd worry about lighting a
forest fire if it blew down, still lit.

Long before internet, I heard of a couple boys who climbed
a side of a factory building. They found a roof hatch and
looked in. Dark in there, and they were curious to see. So
one suggested take some paper, light it on fire, and drop
it in. The paper would land on the factory floor and go out,
but they would be able to see what is in there.

The burning paper landed on some thing combustible, and the
resulting fire went to four alarms and the building was lost.

Back then, the boys likely got spanked by Father when the
news got back home. Now days, we'd have to send them to
cultural awareness class.

Actually, we had a younger guy doing that here just a few years ago.
Sometimes using just a candle, sometimes he'd mix it up by adding a
few colored LEDs as well. Every time he pulled the prank, 911 was
bombarded with 'UFO' calls. The cops were able to narrow the location
of the light down to the same neighborhood, and eventually caught him
at it. They told him to knock it off. He said, "Make me" and
continued. The cop actually cited him using some sort of law against
public nuisance or alarming the public. It got a bit of press here,
since he wasn't doing anything illegal, but every time he did it,
people tied up the 911 operators reporting a mysterious object in the sky.

Can't remember the details, but I read one time about
a dairy farmer who lived near a military base. The fly
boys would try to herd his cows with their jets. He
called the base about it, but nobody saw nothing.

Finally, he got out his old rifle and shot a few holes
in one of the jets that were no where near his herd.

On halloween, in a college dorm back in the days when there was a big bathroom down the hall, we took the bulbs out of the bathroom lights, cracked a couple of glow sticks into the toilet, and added some dry ice.

On the day they deliverd phone books, we carried phone
books up from the loading dock. Put phone books from
floor to ceiling in front of the Resident Assistant's
door. Knocked. RA called for someone to come in, and
we had a hard time to convince him to open the door.

He did, laughed, and we put the phone books back.

Not common in Western NY, though we do have
smallish brush fires now and again. Too wet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wildfires
Still, I'm not one for taking chances if I
can help it.

In the 2 1/2 or so years I was in the fire
explorers, I rolled on maybe three or four
brush or grass or forest floor type fires.

The FD that serves my area does brush fires
now and again, and has a brush truck with small
water tank, and some smaller hose.
