Default File Conversion DWG to PDF, GIF, etc

Can any recommend a free online viewer for DWG? 2nd choice would to install one - not thrilled about installing software from the web.

Today I tried converting DWG to PDF at www.zamzar.com, and the PDF was the wrong proportion - cutting off the left side of the image. I have been using www.zamzar.com for years and doing a great job with other formats.

Original DWG is 11x17 (ratio 1.55)
Converted file is 600x800 (ratio 1.33)

If that doesn't work, this will get to it:

Thanks!

I've never heard of the format but interested since I often have to
convert strange stuff.

Wiki may have some guideline to converters:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.dwg

I've used zamzar and others for pdf conversions but sometimes you just
can't get true conversions.

If you just need a viewer, download the free file viewer from http://
www.autodesk.com/products/dwg/viewers. There's a couple of free viewers
there. I haven't used either but Autodesk is the right place.

You may find:
1. Some CAD software can read DWG and write them
in other formats.
2. Some CAD apps are freeware.

CNET is a problem. It gave a choice that looked like no installation or
installing Conduit, a program that changes the search engine in IE and
does some other stuff I forget. The choice, during intallation,
after downloading, was hard to understand. The second time after I
realized what happened the first time, but was trying to seee where I
went wrong, I coudln't tell if they were offereing to install the
software without Conduit, or with it.

So I found a third choice which was clicking on the X in the uppper
right corner. So I can't tell you if it will install without conduit,
but defintely don't agree to it.

I have a program called Free File Viewer that reads many formats. .
That's its name, which in itself is suspicious, but I haven't had any
problems. If you can download from the url of the person who wrote it,
that's the best way to be safe.

Download CutePDF (free). Hit print of the document, image, etc. of what

That is why he suggested Cute pdf.

You would open the .DWG files in whatever application opens them.
Now you would "print" the files. Normally this would send the file to
your inkjet/laser/whatever printer. BUT if you have cute.pdf installed
you would select it as the printer you want to use and it will "print"
your file out as a .pdf file instead.
It creates a .pdf file instead of actually printing it on paper.

LOL!! I don't think this is related, but after using the program, I shut down the computer. Next time I powered up, an error message came up - need to scan a drive. This has been normal for the last few weeks - probably something getting ready to go. I let it scan the drive. Then 4 hours later it finished. No IE or OE icons on the desktop or the start menu program list. Got them back on the desktop by running from command prompt, but could not get them the back in the program list.

The good news is I used this as a reason to pick up a new laptop. Has Winders 8.1 on it. I'm keeping this one off the internet at least until I drop it a few times.

Man oh man, you have got ALL the answers! I'll give that a try next weekend. Too burned out on Winders for a few days.

I spent all day yesterday and into the night deleting all the coloring book graphics and cutesy "want to play some stupid game" nonsense. Ended up putting direct links to folders on the desktop to save 50 clicks next time I have to do some "work." Some folks already said, "don't you want to learn something new?" Naw, not with a computer I don't. So far the only "improvements" I have seen are that it takes twice as long to do anything - except buy songs, vides or stuff from Amazon.

I would go with a Mac if I had $2000 to spend. What are all the "adults" using for computers these days? It would double productivity if we didn't have to re-learn a new interface every couple of years. Plus repair all the things we have broken while fighting with the new system.

Last few computers I bought were because it has been less expensive and painful to buy one with the latest OS installed than to buy the OS and upgrade current PC. This one is an exception. Would have bought Win7 if I had known how much time it would take to start using it.

I have 4-5 usable computers around from TI 99/4A and XT on. One of these daze I would like to install Linux and all free software and try to make a go of it.

FYI.... OS market share as of January 2015...

Windows 7 - 55.92%
Windows XP - 18.93%
Windows 8.1 - 10.04%
Windows 8 - 3.79%
Mac OS X 10.10 - 3.45%
Windows Vista - 2.44%
Mac OS X 10.9 - 1.82%
Linux - 1.34%
Mac OS X 10.6 - 0.65%
Mac OS X 10.7 - 0.53%
Mac OS X 10.8 - 0.48%
Windows NT - 0.21%
Mac OS X 10.5 - 0.12%
Windows 2000 - 0.08%
Windows 10 - 0.05%
Win64 - 0.04%
Mac OS X 10.4 - 0.03%
Windows 98 - 0.03%
Windows 3.1 - 0.03%
Mac OS X (no version reported) - 0.01%
Windows ME - 0.00%
Windows 95, etc. - Not Listed

LibreCAD is a free Open Source CAD application for Windows, Apple and
Linux. ( (another poster gave a link here before).

DWG is supported.

If it helps you.

Download CutePDF (free). Hit print of the document, image, etc.
of what you want then select Cute PDF instead of the printer.
It will save it to a PDF file in the folder of your choosing.
Thanks, I'm trying to go the other way. I have DWG files and
need to convert to something more common, like PDF, GIF, BMP,
etc.

That is why he suggested Cute pdf.

You would open the .DWG files in whatever application opens them.
Now you would "print" the files. Normally this would send the file
to your inkjet/laser/whatever printer. BUT if you have cute.pdf
installed you would select it as the printer you want to use and it
will "print" your file out as a .pdf file instead. It creates a
.pdf file instead of actually printing it on paper.

Thanks, I use something like that to create PDFs also. This time I
don't have the software to open DWG files.

Ahh, that would help.

DraftSight will read, save, and print .dwg files And it's FREE for
personal non-commercial use!

You don't have to spend $2k.

Get a Mac Mini (midrange model), comes with 8gb RAM and IRIS graphics,
with a 1tb fusion drive (actually, this is TWO drives, a 1tb
platter-based HDD -and- a 128gb SSD, "melded together" by software so
that they appear as a single 1.125tb drive on the desktop, and it's VERY
fast). 4 USB3 ports, HDMI, 2 thunderbolt ports that double as
minidisplayports.

$950.

You can use the display, keyboard and mouse that you have now.

Thanks, I'll definitely look at this one. Right now price is big deal for me, even if I have to spend 3 weeks fine tuning it. HP 15-F079-WM was on sale for $240 at www.frys.com. The only reason I bought it was because I could not find a printer to run with Win 2000 - which works great for me. Lots of suggestions online for Brother, Canon, etc., but none I could find new had drivers. I picked up a couple of "new" ones thru craigslist and the worked fine about 2 weeks.

Anyway, I'm set for now. Win8 and two 2000's are networked. It's a pain to have to transfer to the Win8 just to print, but I've got a link on the desktop, so it's a 2 click process.

When I get enough $$ stashed away, I'm going to load all these windows machines up with software, fire them off on ebay, and get Macs.

...... whoops, sent by mistake....

One last comment -- for me "computers" are strictly a necessary evil. I much prefer paper in manila folders, notebooks and scratch pads. Takes much longer to do anything by computer. "Documentation" via computer is killing R&D. In the old days, we had one secretary for 10 engineers who did an unbelievably good job and was worshiped by all of us. Never saw a stereotypical secretary, and more than I have seen a stereotypical jock. I've come to the conclusion that these images are made up by someone with an agenda.

Anyway, that's all and sign it...
