If any of you are using NewsProxy to filter newsgroup postings, add this line to your nfilter.dat
file to drop HomeGuy's posts:

alt.home.repair drop NNTP-Posting-Host:
uPgK13HseOvGgdY6dNb/Qg.user.speranza.aioe.org

Notes:
1. make sure it's all on one line
2. works only if your newsserver passes the NNTP-Posting-Host header to your client (some
don't)

Thank's Doug.

I'll have to try that.

I'm just using Internet Explorer 8.0 on a dial-up connection, so is there anything I can do to get rid of the continuous mormon bashing and daily updates of where the USA currently is in it's inexorable slide down the huge cosmic toilet bowl. It gets tiring.

Any idea how I'd get that line into XNews?

XNews' Help mentions using the NNTP-Posting-Host header for killfiling, but
then XNews gives you no way to actually enter that line directly into its
Score file or through its dialog box front-end for the Score file. When I
enter the line manually the way I've done all the rest of my killfiling, it
does not work.

First, download a real newsreader such as XNews or Agent. Then download a copy of
NewsProxy, and you'll be able to filter anything you want.

I telnetted into my provider to see if they support XHDR, and they do. Or
at least it's mentioned in the command list when I type "help".

So I added these lines to my score file:

[^alt.home.repair$]
Sco: -9999
NNTP-Posting-Host: uPgK13HseOvGgdY6dNb/Qg.user.speranza.aioe.org

But I must be doing something wrong, because it doesn't work.

Hit Ctrl-E and you can edit the score file directly with Notepad.
Create a new score rule like this:

[^alt.home.repair$]

% filter out Homeguy
Sco -9999
NNTP-Posting-Host: uPgK13HseOvGgdY6dNb\/Qg\.user\.speranza\.aioe\.org

You could shorten that line like this and it should work equally well:

NNTP-Posting-Host: uPgK13HseOvGgdY6dNb\/Qg\.*aioe

That's assuming that recipe actually works - I haven't tried it,
and I must have managed to filter him out somehow already, as I
never see his posts.

The slashes and dots need to be escaped by preceding them with a
backslash, because those characters have special meaning. The backslash
tells the scoring engine that those characters are to be taken
literally. See my post from a few minutes ago.

NewsProxy (find the latest v 2.x) will run under Win7. The software
is no longer developed as I've read. It is free. Install the proxy,
point the reader at it and point the proxy at the NNTP server.

The *.dat file is a text file to add / remove syntax.

Now, my question is:

Will Agent 6 or 7 filter a domain, will it filter one person in that
domain?

Will it filter by posting news reader?

Sorry for two questions ...

Thanks very much for the tips on the escaping. I would never have thought
of that.

However, it's not working to delete posts that already exist in my store
but have not been read. Usually, when I killfile, existing unread posts are
automatically deleted when the window is re-scored.

Stop storing stuff.

Out of necessity I was using deletion-from-storage as an indicator for the
efficacy of Nil's suggestions.

If Home Guy would be so kind as to post one of his silly messages, I can
test Nil's solution directly.

Hmm. Looks like NewsProxy involves somewhat more than just clicking an EXE
file and telling the User Account Control box to f**k off. It will have to
wait until I have more time to fool around the way I used to back when I
had a Linux machine..

NP runs in real time in the background. After that and editing the
*.dat file a bit - you just open you reader as if nothing is
different. Takes a few minutes to install and configure.

The sour grape is that it's not supported anymore.

He may be pulling this scam on others. We had a guy using phone cards
from prison. His girlfriend collected names from obituaries, acquired
cards in the those names and then sent the card number to the convict.

I told Sprint to send me a subpoena so I could give all his phone call
recordings.

You could contact the Warden's Office :-\

I would imagine something like that if I started corresponding with
him. I forwarded the letter to a cousin who I believe that it was his
father's first wife. Don't know what he will do but he is a retired
state cop.

I had a former professor just get out of jail a few years ago. All
his students were curious to know about him but there were none that
wanted to contact him.

No .dat file anywhere in the NP tarball. Is it generated after a successful

So easy this 51-year-old can't do it.

I installed Perl. Then I tried making sense of the Druidic runes in the NP
help files. This is over my head; I can't do it. You sure this is supposed
to run under Windows? Looks pretty Linux-y to me.

No marcha. My Windows 7 doesn't seem to like the executable. The install
dialog comes up, but the install itself locks up right after clicking the
Install button. Playing with the compatibility settings doesn't help.

I think I'm going to need to continue to manually delete Home Guy's posts.

Thanks for your help.

.... another thought. Are you running 64 bit Win7 ?

That could be the reason... it runs in 32 bit installed.

Curious

Yep, I've got 64-bit Win7. I even tried closing my firewall, anti-virus,
and Spybot. No dice.

The install process (run as Administrator) starts up with np-120.exe
showing up in the processes list, along with setup.exe. But no CPU
resources are being used, and the program stalls dead. Also tried running
it under "compatibility mode" for WinXP and Win98.

I have other 32-bit programs that work just fine running under 64-bit.
Maybe NewsProxy isn't one of the "compatible" ones. Microsoft's
Compatibility website doesn't list NP at all.

I'm not sure that NP is fully 32 bit. It may have some 16 bit coding?
The files are dated 1999. 64 bit handles files much differently -
likely the reason it will not run.
