Default what do I do with a 22 long rife bullet that did not fire

a bit off topic...

What should I do with those "dud" 22 long rifle cartridges/bullets that do
not fire? I usually try to fire them a 2nd or 3rd time, but sometimes they
don't fire. So I have this cartridge with bullet intact with 2 or 3 dents
in the rim that I hate to just toss out in the pasture.

I'd call my local police or gun shop. Either might offer to take them off your
hand for disposal. Or perhaps call your local hazardous waste facility.

Dispose of it safely, put it in your fireplace. Have fun with it, hit
it with a hammer. Stick it in the turkey before you cook it.

I pull the bullet off the cartridge (with pliers), toss the powder on
the front lawn and fill the casing with oil. The powder will fertilize
the lawn and the oil will deactivate the primer. I guess the powder
could ignite when you do this, but it has never happened to me. YMMV

Works for me. They aren't all that dangerous, unless you dispose of them in
a fire.

Trash can. I would not pull bullet from a rimfire as primer might go
off if rim pinched too hard. My shooting club has a dud box. Don't
know how they dispose.

You put then in a thick steel box, and run the box through a furnace. It
cooks off all the rounds harmlessly. Not worth it unless you have a lot
of them, enough so a scrap company will pay for the residue.

I should have added -- I have small children around.

I thought about trying to pull the bullet out.. but there seems to be some
risk that it goes off.

Tossing them in the trash seems to be the way to transfer the problem, but
not solve it.

I'd like to neutralize any risk of it ever going off.

Sounds like PD or gun shop.

Soak them in kerosene for a couple of days. That should soak past the
bullet and deactivate the powder and primer. Also, your local shooting
range can dispose of duds for you.

Of those, I'd choose gun shop. The PD may start an investigation, and end up
giving you more trouble.

The only risk of trouble with trash, if your area incinerates.

I pull the bullet out. Discard bullet. Pour gunpowder into a pile. Burn
powder - just hold a match to it, it burns fairly quickly. Don't burn too
big of a pile at once. And don't even think of having an open can of
gunpower or anything else flammable anywhere remotely close. I used to take
the empty shells and hold them in a pair of pliers and hold them over a
candle. They pop after a few seconds, but not that loud - the primer burns
very fast, fast enough to make a popping noise - but there isn't very much
of it (don't try this at home, kids - you can blow a finger off or worse if
you are not very very carefull).

How many duds do you get? I have gone through many thousand 22 shots and
can scarcely even remember having a dud. Maybe the ammo is really old or
contaminated with oil? Or maybe a problem with your gun, weak spring or
just dirty.

Pulling 22 bullets out is easy you can almost do it without tools. I
hold the cartridge in my hand and grab the lead with pliers or vise
grips. Don't try to pull straight out but rather bend the lead out over
the side of the casing. It's all in the wrist action....

I don't think you could ever set one off like that but even if you did,
it's not particularly dangerous. Most of the powder doesn't even ignite
unless it's contained the the barrel of a gun. You might want to wear
safety glasses or goggles.
Even in a fire 22's don't do much, the lead doesn't move much, the hot
brass casings do fly around.

You can soak the casing in WD40 or any oil to deactivate the primer and
gun powder. I think that soaking will even work to deactivate before
pulling the bullet. Most of the reason to pull the bullet is to prevent
someone else from finding them and trying to fire them again or people
freaking out.

I wouldn't bother the police or gun shop.

They aren't even dangerous if you throw them in a fire. The case will

Even if it goes off there is no danger. Unless it is confined in a
gun barrel the most that happens is the case splits, may move a few
inches, but the bullet just lays there.

I went through many boxes of 22's back when I was a kid and never had
a misfire except for in one gun with a weak firing pin. Sometimes had
to try to fire it 2 or 3 times before it would go off (or shift it to
another gun).

Frankly, I can't imagine this being a problem worth thinking about.
It has been over fifty years since I have fired rimfires, but in my
teens and twenties, I have shot tons of boxes of 22 rimfires, and
never had a single one that didn't fire.

Either they are making inferior ammo now days, or you have a problem
with your gun.

What's the big deal?

It will do just what Harry K says. It will pop and the case will blow
backwards a short distance. I've done this many times.

Can only get a high velocity projectile if have a tightly fitting
compression chamber to contain/direct the bullet and hold the casing
diameter.

It's a .22, not a 50-cal round. Without the tightly-fitting long tube
from the gun, it's practically harmless even if it does go off.

Besides, the bullet will practically fall out of the casing. You take
two pairs of pliers, grab the casing lightly with one, grab the bullet
lightly with the other, give a little wiggle, and the round is
rendered inert.

Tossing them in the trash seems to be the way to transfer the problem, but
not solve it.

What problem? A Hefty bag can contain the "blast" from an unchambered .
22 cartridge should it go off.

I had a gun with a weak firing pin. A round that misfired in it would
fire in another gun or even with multiple tries in the same gun.

Fire? Yes. Dangerous? No. You can try it yourself if you have a
wood stove or a bonfire. Just toss a handfull of them in and it will
sound like firecrackers but no damage to anything.

What should I do with those "dud" 22 long rifle cartridges/bullets
that do not fire? I usually try to fire them a 2nd or 3rd time, but
sometimes they don't fire. So I have this cartridge with bullet
intact with 2 or 3 dents in the rim that I hate to just toss out in
the pasture.

Trash can.

They aren't even dangerous if you throw them in a fire. The case will
split, the bullet will just lay there. Case may move a few inches.

How could it? Think about how a gun works. The bullet is contained in a
chamber that only allows the expanding gas to escape in one direction.

It will do just what Harry K says. It will pop and the case will blow

Huh?

This true? Toss a 22LR into a fire, and it will not fire?

When I was a kid many years ago, we would stick 22 shells in the mud
by stock tanks. Back off a ways and shoot them with BB guns. The cases
would go singing. I don't know if they split. I never found one.

Perhaps in an open fire they just lay there but with a half inch of
mud acting as a barrel, they go flying.

You can use a "bullet puller." It's a simple device used by [reloaders.]
It consists of a hammer that at one end has a compression fitting where you
insert the bullet. By 'hammering' the tool, the bullet is separated from
it's casing without firing, thus rendering the bullet harmless.
