Default What is a good brand of lighting fixture ???

5 of the light fixtures I have replaced within the past 4 years have
become defective. All were purchased from Home Depot ( I guess
made in China, which is garbage).....However I haven't found anything
that has quality in any of the chain stores.

I need a 4' 4 light flourescent in the Kitchen.... a hanging fixture for the
dinette, an entrance foyer light and 3 motion detectors for outdoors.

All were replaced within the past few years (replacements were from Home
Depot) and all have failed. All of the other fixtures in the house have
about 15 - 25 years on them and are working fine.

Are there any quality lighting fixture brands that I should be looking for ??

Thanking you in advance !!!

Go to a real lighting store. They handle brands like
http://www.quoizel.com/Q2000Catalog.htm

Usually prices are around one half list.

It sounds odd that the fixtures *you* have replaced have all failed within
just four years. I have had good luck with Chinese made stuff, as much of
American brands are, if you look carefully. Were the fixtures properly
installed, wired, and grounded?

Just the ones from Home Depot have failed !! I've installed several others
some were antique and used, others were newer fixtures that I purchased
about 15 years ago before all the stuff came in from china. These worked
and are working fine.

Nope... only the chinese ones from Home Depot failed. Of course Home
Depot deals with a lot of cheap stuff anyway.... so you get what you pay for.
Just by opening the fixture and checking the wiring...you can see the cheapness.

OT.... I opened up a new work piece support stand this morning... made in China,
the inside of the legs were already rusting, and I could pour rust chips out of them.
No longer had the receipt so I didn't bother returning it to the store, but this is a
real fine example of the garbage that has been coming in from China.

But I am looking for suggestions on good quality fixtures...ones that are made in
america are preferable. Had enough of the Home Depot garbage.

Peter.

How exactly are the fixtures failing? I've bought plenty of Hampton Bay
(HD) fixtures and had absolutely no problems.

Not much to a light fixture, really...

The Flourescent fixture (kitchen) only lights two bulbs out of four
and these are only half bright.

Foyer fixture is a 4 bulb fixture only one outlet lights....all the bulbs
were tested and worked in another fixture.

Dinette Fixture was a hanging "Tiffany candle style). One of the
bulb holders doesn't light and the rest of the lights dim and brighten
randomly...high circuit imedance.

I won't even bother going into the motion detector lights except to
say that one is completely dead...and the others are totally flakey.

Another poster asked..."if they were installed correctly"... well not
really much to hooking up a neutral, wall switched black , and connected ground....
( I haven't really checked the internal wiring of the fixtures to insure
that they were manufactured correctly....). And the house wiring has been
checked for polarity, voltage levels and grounds

But just to double check, I made a pigtail out of an electrical cord
and checked each fixture by itself, out of the electrical circuit.
Each fixture tests out as defective.

I thing two were Hampton Bays.... one was another brand. All
came from Home Depot...

anecdotal story.... I also installed an outdoor fixture at a friends house,
picked the fixture up at Home Depot...another Hampton Bay.....I also
needed to put a fixture block up and purchased longer electrical screws
so everything would fit perfectly. (note electrical screw sizes used to be 10/32's"

Well, put thre fixture up and when it came time to use the caps nuts to tighten
everything in I found that the thread sizes for these fixtures were METRIC
and Home Depot does not carry longer size metric screw lengths. Course, maybe
a monday morning quarterback hearing this story would have said "Well,
you should have know they were metric." But when I brought the fixture back to
the store....every salesperson, including the one's who worked as electricians say
"it wasn't possible, they had to be 10/32's" and they were only convinced after I
demonstrated that it was indeed a metric thread".

Anyway, life is too short to deal with this. I'm just looking for reputable, reliable
brand names that are not from Home Depot or Lowe's or Wal Mart.

Thanks !!

There has been many recalls of HD light fixtures. Check your models out at
the store for recall info.
