Building in Flagstaff AZ
I'll soon be relocating to Flagstaff Arizona and I'm exploring housing
options. In addition to the usual, houses, condos etc. I'm considering purchasing some land and having a small home constructed. The structure need not be large, this will be a second home, and I'll be commuting to Tucson on weekends. If I go this route, I'd like an energy efficient design. I presently own a passive-solar rammed-earth house in Tucson and love it. I have a few questions I hope someone can answer. First, are log cabin kits a reasonable way to go? I won't have time to do it myself so I'll be looking for a turn-key set up. Second, can anyone recommend a reliable builder in the Flagstaff area? Again, energy efficiency is important whether it's a log, straw bale, or more conventional construction. Trombe windows, and A frame with a loft and other things are all acceptable. I'll go with stock plans if that will cut the time and costs. Third, realistically, what will a 1200 - 1500 square foot home cost and how long will it take to complete? We're coming into the winter so I assume construction will shut down for a few months. Thanks in advance pjbphd -- Too many spams have forced me to alter my email. You might look at www.pbspanels.com Send them a drawing on the back of an envelope, and after a few iterations, your house arrives as a stack of lightweight 8'x24' panels on a flatbed truck. They have an impressive factory in Phoenix... Nick |

Here in Canada, where we know about real winters, construction proceeds throughout the cold season with only a few minor delays for temperature sensitive processes -- concrete is poured throughout winter.
