So the dishwasher died, and the landlord is going to get a new one.
He's going to get a cheap one, that's a given. I may be able to
persuade him to get a specific model, provided it's within the price
range. So what's the best dishwasher out there under $200?

However, not that cheap that after 17 years when the pump went in our
Kenmore washer that is made sense to repair, rather than replace. We
replaced it with another Kenmore washing machine for $350 Canadian-- a price
I haven't seen that low for years..up here.

I suggest you check Consumer Reports' Annual Buying Guide. They
have done a review on dish washers that you might find helpful.

PWAAAAAAAAAAAAH!! $275!!!! Uhhhh...

I felt way extravagant paying $120 for our Bunn ThermaFresh!! I wouldn't
have even got it except I was sick of replacing el-cheapo brewers every
few months and it came with a 5-year, "no questions asked" replacement
warranty. Also, it's easy to maintain and it brews a pot of coffee in
under a minute! I don't have to worry about whether I turned it off or not
(there's no warmer element with the thermal caraffe thingy).

But $275 for a coffeemaker... I love my coffee, but that's just plain
ridiculous!

If you "totally need one of those" you're in the wrong newsgroup! Perhaps
alt.support.depression.manic would be useful for you! :-)

No it's not. It's a picture of dishwasher reliability from good to bad. It
says nothing of how well they actually clean. I did a lot of research into
this when buying a new dishwasher, but I wasn't limited to $200. You can't
go just by brand either, different models within each brand clean
differently and have different reliability ratings.

At the time, three years ago, Maytag had the best balance of reliability and
cleaning. The Maytag I bought replaced an existing working Whirlpool that
worked fine except it cleaned poorly.

In this case, the poster doesn't care about reliability as he is not
responsible for the repairs. The landlord is short-sighted. I have a rental
unit and I never replace appliances based on the cheapest stuff I can buy.
This means more repairs down the road, and the cost of the appliance is tax
deductible anyway. Plus I want happy tenants that won't move.

I would "pursuade" your landlord to atleast get you a dishwasher with
an upper and lower spray arm. You will be unhappy with one that only
has the lower arm,even if it has a pop-up "spray tower". If I had only
a couple hundred bucks to spend on a dishwaqsher, I'd go to Home Depot
or Lowes and get a Frigidare with the 2 spray arms. The are quiet,have
a low water consumption.

I disagree.

My experiences have been that the extra spray arm contributes little - if
anything to the overall cleaning power, even of the items on the top rack.

The upper spray arm may work for one reason, though: a dishwasher could be
improperly loaded through ignorance or neglect. But nothing is foolproof.

A well designed system has plenty of cleaning power from the floor up.
It's what, 21 or 22 inches to the ceiling from the water level?

Can you say "sales gimmicks"?
