WHO DO I CALL ? I know there was name for that. GREG I get bombarded with insulation companies trying to search that. I basically do this my self with fans and thermal guns, but I need to tell someone where to look fo help. They raised my natural gas rates last summer, then dropped them slightly this month. Still about 11.5 MCF + 3.5 MCF distribution. I bought propane yesterday for refill of $18, RIP OFF. They might not have filled thier tank since summer, but the price should have come down with gasoline rates. Its cold and my Gas bill was $150 last Dec. I found it on the DIY TV pages. Thats where I saw it first for about $100-$200 Professional Home Energy Auditor http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/he_dia...3893_2274796,0 0.html I'll tell a problem I have in my house. I have gone around with an IR gun many times. Between the top of the walls and edge of the exterior ceiling, there is a cold spot. IIts too hard to see whats happening and its difficult to examine due to the angle of the roof. I COULD fix it by installing foam crown molding. Thats what I have been thinking. There is probably some cold spot also in the corners of the walls. The bottoms of the walls tend to be coldest near the bottom. Adding insulated wall board, the name slips me, on the bottom third could fix that problem. Putting spray foam insulation in my hollow wooden front door was the best thing I did last year. greg |

Id say you need an energy audit, your utility co may do it. 150$ how many square ft, what kind of heat system. windows, what R values do you have. www.energystar.gov is a good place to learn. 150 yr lucky I will pay maybe 3500.00 this month. |

Just under 8 MCF. The trouble is, I don't know what to believe as there is a fault on the billing, cause I can't really tell if its estimated or actual. 1000 sq ft upstairs, and I partially insulated the basement, but don't worry about keeping that up to temperature right now. I'm still remodling. there is 1000 sq ft downstairs also. Parts of it are fully exposed to the outside, or above ground. Added at least R25 in attic, normal R11 in walls plus brick. Added 9, all but one new windows installed myself this fall for about $1500. I wanted to know the name of the test so I could refer a friend. he uses 4 times what I use. My normal electricity bills are usually under $50 a month with air conditioning, but can increas a bit if I get into using electric heaters, especially the 4800 watt garage heater, separate from the house. When I moved the old gas company was expensive, but the new company is now charging what the old one was charging 4-5 years ago. They say its comming down. greg |

Well I have been trying to put automatic controls on the outside lamps. With another person my bills are more like $60 average now. My electricity is about half what it was in the old house. I do not need an energy audit. Another person needed one and I was trying to think of the term "energy audit". I know how to test my house. greg |

Like I whined the last few times this came up on here, nobody around here offers testing services. I've asked heating companies and utility companies, and while they all know what I am talking about, they all say 'we don't do that', and don't have anyone to refer me too. So, item by item, I'm doing my best guess at 'best practices' to improve things, on the cheap. Upgrade furnace, add 6" to attic, improve attic venting, reputty windows and fix the storms, ad naseum. I know for 10-15 grand I could get major improvements, but I'd never get it back on reduced bills before I sell, or in resale price. Next project, once I figure a painless cheap way to do it, is to insulate exposed part of foundation and crawlspace, currently a major heat loss spot. (raised ranch) Painless, but maybe not cheap, would be to hire out a company to spray polyurethane closed cell foam insulation in that area. I'm having a company come out Thursday to give me a price on doing the box band of my drafty 1930 house. I think this will return priceless dividends and am hoping to get a quote under $1k (a colleague had his house done for $700, but I'm not sure how large his house is relative to mine other than it's smaller). The same colleague told me he found the closed cell foam to be a far better insulator than the open cell icynene stuff. |
