Default Slant vent in kitchen

The house I'm renting was built in 1940 and has an apparent vent that is
framed in and cut into the ceiling. It is slanted and appears to be a
passive vent into the attic. There's a smaller one in the bathroom. Anyone
have any experience with a venting system like that? I'd like to coer the
one over the tub as it's sort of creepy not knowing if critters could come in
from the attic. Any ideas? I have a picture available but no idea how to
get it on here.
