Sears 27443238190 and GE 26GT620F01 TV Problems
Hi. I have the two sets listed above and both have fairly strange issues.
(Strange to me anyway...) The Sears set died a couple of days ago. The screen is predominantly white with tinges of color in the background. When I hit the front panel controls I can see them responding on the OSD. There is no audio distortion. I inadvertantly detached RT4201 (Degaussing Therm(istor?)) from its leads. The solder joints were apparently very poorly done or had become brittle over time. Is this the cause of the issue or am I facing some other failure such as a CRT? Is it even worth my time and or money to get this fixed? The RCA set has had issues for a while and I think the tuner has failed on this unit. When I turn it on after it has been unplugged for a good while (overnight) it autoscans the channels and returns to channel 3. This is all well and good. However, as soon as I attempt to change the channel, the set immediately goes to channel 91 and I cannot change it to any other channel. The OSD still works and it will act as though it is scanning for channels when I select autoprogram but 91 is the only channel available. The quick and easy solution is to get used to channel 3. Is this most likely a tuner problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Roy |

Please read www.repairfaq.org then post the required information so someone
might be able to point you in the right direction. You left out real important information like CHASSIS number, model number means very little without wasting out time looking up cross reference information when you have it right in front of you on the chassis on the rear label. There was also no real troubleshooting information, voltages, waveforms, signal tracing or substitution, system control logic diagnosis, etc. I am just guessing both are a ctc177 derivitive chassis, in which case the repairfaq should answer all your questions. Subject: Sears 27443238190 and GE 26GT620F01 TV Problems
From: "David" Date: 11/18/03 10:33 PM Eastern I am just guessing both are a ctc177 derivitive chassis, in which case the repairfaq should answer all your questions. My guess is that the GE is an older model from the 145\9 era. He says that it autoprograms and comes up on 3 when turned on from being unplugged without being propted to do so. I'd also guess that the tuner is okay, but he has an AFT problem with affects the autoprogram. I wonder if the rest of the channels work on direct enter on the remote....... John |

John The GE is chassis CTC149A. After autoprogramming the unit comes up to channel 3 and then when any channel button is pushed, whether on the unit itself or on the remote, it goes directly to channel 91 and will not change thereafter. The Sears unit is chassis CTC166A and everything appears to work on it except for the picture being predominantly white with scan lines. I can change channels and audio is perfectly fine. I can even make out OSD information in the proper position. It is just overpowered by whiteness and very out of focus. I am sorry that my troubleshooting is not very thorough but I am not a TV tech and I have no way of checking waveforms or diagnosing system control logic. I imagine that if I had those resources at hand and knew what to look for and where to look for it I could have probably troubleshot the problem on my own. Please note that I am not asking for specific answers here. I am just going to go ahead and ditch the units anyway. There is a nice 46" HDTV in my very new future. However, I would hate to throw these units away if I could reasonably expect to repair them for about 100 each and then give them to a local charity. I just wondered whether anyone had an expert opinion as to the repair worthiness of these units. As it stands I will probably take them to my local TV repair center and have them give me some repair estimates. Thanks for the replies. Roy |

ctc149 chassis, well known for tuner failures as well as the video
discrimintor and aft coils going out of tolerance. Possibly under a $100 repair if the service you use has access to lower cost rebuilt tuners if the tuner is actually bad. The ctc166 has probably one of three failures, easy to fix for any experienced tech, a shorted luminance transistor or a failing 200v video output scan derived power supply capacitor going bad. Rarely the picture tube will short causing this symptom in that set or a failure in the focus/g2 divider assembly. David yeahright wrote in message ... "John Del" wrote in message ... Sears 27443238190 and GE 26GT620F01 TV Problems - Thanks Dave and John
"John Del" wrote in message ... Subject: Sears 27443238190 and GE 26GT620F01 TV Problems From: "yeahright" Date: 11/19/03 6:21 PM Eastern Standard Time The GE is chassis CTC149A. After autoprogramming the unit comes up to channel 3 and then when any channel button is pushed, whether on the unit itself or on the remote, it goes directly to channel 91 and will not change thereafter. That doesn't make sense. You mean if you enter "0"-"8" on the remote control, it goes to 91??? If you mean that pushing ch up or down on the remote or TV causes it to go to 91, that is what normally happens when the autoprogram function finds no active channels (like when the AFT circuit is inop) If the TV does indeed go to 91 when the actual number buttons are pushed, then it sounds like the uPc is bad, but it's unlikely. Doh! You, sir, are correct. I can reliably change channels by selecting them using the '0' - '9' buttons. I have noticed that when the cable is connected to the television I have poor tuning on several channels. When I use the tuner on my '92 era VCR I get every channel. My assumption here is that this is not a major issue since the tuning circuits are apparently bad anyway. Once again....thanks for the answers. I appreciate the patience you guys have exhibited. Based on the advice I have received from both of you I am going to take them both in for estimates. Roy |
